THAMES COUNTY.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The Thames County Council met or, Wednesday. Present:. Crs. W. J. McCormick (acting-chairman), G. IlBlackett, W. Brunton, A. Alley, ENiccel, P. Faithful, and G. Cox. MOTION OF SYMPATHY. A motion was passed expressing sympathy with the county chairman (Mr H. Lowe) in his illness’, and trusting that be would return completely restored to health. PARAWAI-KOPU ROAD. The consulting engineer (Mr E. F. Powell) telegraphed that he had brought the question of a grant for the Parawai-Kopu road before the Minister of Public Works, and,expected to obtain his approval. PURIRI-TAIRUA ROAD. Mr Baker, district engineer, advised that he had no doubt the Public Works Department would approve of the £209 available for the Neavesville section of the Puriri-Tairua road being spent on any other, portion if sound reasons were given for the change. Or. Cox said it would be advisable to have the' vote transferred to the lower portion of the road. On the motion of Cr. Faithful ;t was decided to apply to have the amount transferred, as suggested bv Cr. Cox. WHANGAMATA-HIKUTAIA. The District Engineer asked the council to submit proposals for £3OO in connection .with the WhangamataHikutaia road. —Request agreed to. WH ANGAM AT A-WAIHI. The Minister of Public Works forwarded a letter from Mr L. G. Martyn, of Hikutaia, in whiqh the writer agreed to contribute work to .the value of £5O towards the Whanga-mata-Waihi road. The clerk was authorised to obtain cross sections and call tenders. WHANGAMATA WHARF. The Whangamata Settlers’ Association forwarded a petition in connection with the proposed wharf at Whangamata; also a letter from the Great Northern Waihi G-M. Co., dated March 17, 1921, in which the writers promised to contribute £so' at a l.atei date.. The clerk said the plans of the wharf had not so far been' favourably received by the district engineei. The -correspondence was held over pending receipt of the district engineer’s report. HIKUTAIA ROAD. Ellis and Co. advised that the union asphalt ordered by the county was coming forward in the steamer Hauraki, which was due from San Fran ci soft about the last week of this month. KOPU FERRY. Mr F. E. Powell (consulting engineer) forwarded speicflcations for Kopu ferry , landings. The clerk (Mr McElroy)' said tns blue prints had not yet arrived, but ■when they did copies of the specifications ana would be sent to the local bodies interested. KAUAERANGA BRIDGE. The county foreman (Mr J. HHodge) reported on the condition of the Kauaeranga Stream bridge, stating: “Owing to the tops of several of the stringers being in such a rotten condition, and the cross-decking being past renewal, it is impossible to maintain the fore and aft decking in an efficient -state of repair: consequently there is a danger of an accident to horse traffic happening at any time.” The traffic had increased, not only in the number of vehicles, but. in weight. Consequently he recommended general repah’s. The chairman said there was a lot of life in the bridge yet. It only, wanted heavier timber for the decking. Cr. Niccol said the traffic over the bridge should be supervised on race days. On the motion of Cr. Cbx it was decided to confer with the Borough Council with a view to immediately having substantial repairs done.
