FREE PLACES. THE NEW REGULATIONS. The Education Department has announced new regulations in connection .with the admission of free place scholars to the high schools. Formerly a holder of a proficiency certificate was not able to enter a school as a free place student unless he was under. 15 years of age on December 1 preceding his admission to the school. Under the amended regulations any pupil who has obtained a certificate of proficiency, but is over 15 years of age, may, within six months after obtaining such certificate, be admitted to a free place if he has been recommended therefor by a senior inspector oi schools and takes a course of instruction that meets with the approval of the Director of Education. The regulations also provide that if any pupil is in attendance at a secondary school or a district high sciiooi on the date this regulation comes into force and has been debarred from holding a free place solely by reason of age he may, on receipt of a favourable report from the principal, be admitted by’ the director to a junior free place during tihe year 1923.
