TELEPHONE BATES COMPARED. /MINISTER’S COMMENTS. Commenting on the telephone charges made in New Zealand as compared with those ruling in other countries, the Postmaster-General (Hon. J. G. Coates), in a report just made, says : “In the Commonwealth oE> Australia, a city business subscriber making 6000 effective calls 'per annum would be required to pay , a ground rental of. £5 per annum, plus a fee of l%d for each effective call, equivalent to a. rental of £3l 5s per annum ; while in the United Kingdom a similar subscriber would have to pay a rental of £8 10s per annum, plus a fee of l%d for each effective call, equivalent to a rental of £34 per annum. “Summarised, ,a city business subscriber making 6000 effective calis per annum now pays : — In New Zealand, £9 10s per annum. In Australia, £3l 5s per annum. In United Kingdom, £34 Ifrs per annum. “For the various reasons stated it is imperative that the existing rating system should be completely revised to meet present-day conditions. '
