LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Attention is drawn to a. Land and Income Tax notice appearing in this issue.* The Hauraki Plains County Engineer (Mr J. Higgins) invites tenders for various work at the Hikutaia quarry.* As requested by the Turua Tow i Board, the Turua, factory whistle is now blown at 6.15 a.m., 8 a.m. noon, 1 p.m., and 5 p.m. I Miss Allee Wilkinson, soloist, of Dunedin, will sing at the evening service at the Methodist Church on Sunday. It was stated at the Turua Town Board meeting that the Thames Borough Council’s quarry had been closed down as inferior metal had been struck. The question of providing a waiting room for ladies .at the Hikutaia station will, the District Traffic Manager advises, be considered as soon as funds are available. During the week'the express trains, both in and out. of Paeroa, have cairied more than the average number of passengers. Increased prosperity brought about )jy the enhanced prices obtained for produce is apparently enabling many more to travel -than at the similar period of last year. , “I have known people who have gone to England to take up farming, and haVe been glad to ge,t back again,” said Mr H. G. Rutter, the land agent, to a Wellington Times reporter a few days ago. ‘‘Conditions are better here and in our products, especially lamb, no country can compete wi.th us.” . General repairs to the fcotpaths in the main street, which were previously deferred owing to their being more urgent work on hand, were commenced oh Monday. Rapid progress appears to have been made since then, and it is. now evident that this important work will be pressed bn without delay. The current, number of “Aussie,” Australia’s laugh-making pcurnal, is, as usual, bright and breezy. An abundance of original jokes, smart short stories, combined with amny clecerly-drawn cartoons, tend to make this issue unusually attractive. The Digger edit,tor o£ “Aussie,” Phillip L. Harris, obviously intends’ to make each succeeding issue superior to the last. ,
Tliere has been some activity among cheese buyers in Taranakji during the past week (reports the Stratford Post). One factory in the Stratford district is reported to have .turned down the buyer’s offer, and given his firm a chance to do business at 9%d and tOd for January and February production. One company closed at 9d for delivery in February fio.b. New Plymouth, and it is understood that the same firm closed with Hawera and Eltham companies on practically the same basis;
The merits of the “N.Z. Sporting and Drama-lie Review” stand unquestioned, each issue seeming to eclipse its predecessrtr in point of quality and interest. With the current number is given away a supplement of Scion, the New Zealand Cup and Auckland Cup winner. Snapshots of main events at the Dargaville Racing Club’s meeting as Ellerslie, and another instalment o,f photographs depicting the Auckland Racing Club s carnival also appear. A large number of pictures of incomparable standard include the Skiff Championship of Australia (decided on Sydney Harbour), the Great Northern Derby winner. Now Zealand and Australian products represented in London, bluejackets from H.M.S. Chatham, anil the usual assortment of striking stage and cinema favourites.
