TURUA ROADS.
RESULT OF INVESTIGATIONS. USEFUL INFORMATION. The proposal to lay down bitumenous roads was referred to'at Wednesday night’s meeting of the Turua Town Board. Since the previous' meeting of the board several members and ratepayer, paid a visit .to Cambridge, and inspected the bituminous roads if that borough. The roads were found to be in perfect condition, tfhough they had been down seven ye&i’s. The total cost of maintenance for the whole period had been six pounds, which had been expended in keeping the earth banked up to the bitumen at the sides. The borough! foreman explained that he had found it a good plan to bevel off the sides of the bitumen. It was decided that at, least, a foot of metal would be necessary to protect the edges' of tjie Turua streets, and -the chairman (Mr J. A. Bennett) explained that when the streets were scarified and formed there would be ample shingle available for this. The sides of, Piakp Road would need grading. it was decided that the price -if metal for the scheme should be ascertained from various quarries. Machinery would have to be obtained, but members were of the opinion it, would not be ha,rd to borrow .the money necessary for that. On the motion of Mr F. Olsen, seconded by Mr C. A. Ansford, it was decided that a meeting of ratepayers be held in the Turua. Buildings' at 7.30 p.m. on Monday to consider the raising of a loan to lay down bituminous roads. It was stated tha.t the amount of the loan would be sufficient to • cover Mr Skitrop’s union asphalt, scheme, plus the cost of grading the sides of the Piako Road, but less the £9OO subsidy on Piako Road. If the loan was carried by the time the five-chain experimental strip was neaping completion, but before the montey had actually been raised, a contract could probably be let to the Union Asphalt Co. to enable them to carry on 'with the larger scheme without a cessation. It could probably be arranged to have the county’ engineer supervise the work. It was decided .to invite the riding members of the County Council and the county engineer to be present at the ratepayers’ meeting. It was moved by Mr F. Olsen, and seconded by Mr C. A. Ansford, that the clerk write to the Cambridge Borough Council and thank them for the courtesy shown, and .the information supplied to the Turua party on their recent visit. t
