TURUA, VALEDICTORY. \ An exceptionally large number of settlers .and residents of Tulrua assembled at the Victoria ? Hall on Thursday evening, the occasiori being a farewell to the local, postmistress', Mrs Melsdp. The function was in the form of a social and dance. Mr J. A. Bennett, chairman ofi the Turua Town Board, exposing regret at Mrs Melsops’ departure, spoke of her valuable services during the: time she was in charge of the office. The townspeople had thought fit to show their appreciation of her,, services >n some tangible form, and on their behalf Mr Bennett handed Mrs Melsop a handsome electroplated afternoon tea. set. Mr C. Scott, on behalf o f the Turua Tennis Club, also eulogised Ws Melsop’s qualities and said the club was losing an enthusiastic and highly esteemed member.' He then handed her an entree dish from,tihe members’ of the club. Mrs Melsop w,as also the recipient Of a substantial cheque. Mr J. C. Miller responded on Mrs Melsop’s behalf, expressing- thanks for the handsome tokens of esteem and for the expressions! of goodwill. The remainder ofl the programme was confined chiefly to dancing, and a very pleasant evening was spent. Mr Williams supplied the music. ELECTRIC LIGHT. The Turua people are now fortunate in being able to use the electric light', whicih was switched on for general use last week. On Friday evening, the late night, the shops were lighted with electricity. NGATEA. LIBRARY FUNDS: The committee which promoted the concept and dance on election night had its final meeting on Saturday evening, and gratification was expressed at the result of the function, both socially and financially. The balance-sheet showed tihe receipts to be £39 9s 6d and the expenditure £24 19s' , 4d, leaving an amount of £l4 10s 2d to be handed to the local library committee.

It was decided to thank all those who contributed to the success of the evening, Miss E. Hilford (postmistress), Mr H. A. Hamilton (picture proprietor), and the ladies' who helped with the supper arrangements calling for special mention, Thanks were also due for the consistent energies of several members of the committee, of which Mr S. Bradley was hon. secretary. TELEPHONE EXCHANGE: New subscribers are being daily linked up with the Ngate'a telephone exchange, and the number npw totals 40. When all arrangements ate complete the number should reach 90.
