CHILDRENS COMPETITIONS. Mr W. Hudson, Instructor in Agriculture, reported as follows on his inspection of the garden pots of Paeroa school children : “In company with, Mr J. L. Hanna,' president of the Paeroa Beautifying Society, I have inspected, cihlWen’s home gardens as .scheduled below. “The competitors have entered keenly into the spirit of the work.' It is'evident th,at alll need direction in the laying out and economical, use of ground. With such direction, and with the stimulus of encouragement, there is every (reason to anticipate a highly successful competition nexc yean Home gardening is so closely connected with the school instruction ’that much valuable .assistance can be given through the medium of the school lessons, and this matter is now receiving chip attention. Helling 1. . “Jack Eaddy’s work was considered especially meritorious in view of the fact that the plot judged was only a small portion of the total gar/leniijg under his personal control. ..“On behalf of the Auckland Education Board I desire to express appreciation of the support given, by the Paeroa Beautifying Society.” The following statement was also made by Mr J. L. Hanna : “In adding my quota to the above report I won'ld make special reference to the work of. Jack Eaddy. This boy yis only 12 years old, and does the whole of the vegetable garden work /for his widowed mother and her. family, and does’ it in such a way and to siich an extent as would put a verygreat many grown men to shame. The fact that this boy has the manly spirit to give so much of Ms time to his family at the sacrifice of his ehildish sport speaks, well for his manliness and character generally.”
