THE SHOW

HAURAKI A. AND Pl ASSOCIATION. RECORD HORSE ENTRIES. HIGH-CLASS CATTLE EXHIBITS. TO-DAY’S JUDGING. The Hauraki A. and P. Association opened its 24th annual show tp-day under ideal weather conditions, and judging from the record number of exhibits in some sections, and the high quality of exhibits, this year’s’ csh’ow should eclipse all other fixtures heM by the association. The exhibits in the cattle classes are drawn from the whole of the surrounding district. The Hauraki Plains breeders, especially those round Netherton, have shown more than usual interest this year. The support the association has had in previous years has come.mainly from tihe townspeople, but’ it is particularly gratifying to learn that the country people .are this year showing more interest in the .affairs of the association. The feature Of this year’s show is the exceptionally large eptrics in the horse section. They constitute a remarkable record, showing nearly a Hundred per cent, increase on last year’s figures, which were then regarded as a record for the association. A large number, of horses from outside the district are entered. The hunting and riding events are certain tpf attract more than usual interest to-morrow, people’s day.

The entries in the cattle section are not as, great as last year, though there is a big improvement in quality. The Jersey exhibits are about the same, numerically, as last year, but a better class of stock is in evidence. There is, splendid competition in the Shorthorn classes. . Although the. entries in the Friesian classes are, in some respects, disappointing, there is .a featrue in the exceptionally good exhibits of the Piri Land Company. Among this company’s, exhibits is a bull which is' the highest priced pedigree Friesian bull sold in New Zealand. The district around Paeroa is not adapted for sheep grazing, and these entries are seldom large. This year’s entries, however, compare very favourably ■with those of other years’. The show arrangements in the cattle section, under the chief steward, Mr, J. Hamilton, have proved to be particularly satisfactory, everything having been done for the convenience and pleasure of s the exhiJjitors. Paddocking was provided for all cattle from outside districts.

Special arrangements' have been made for the amusement of those not particularly interested in the exhibition of stock by the provision of numerous side-shows. These include an exhibition of wood chopping by Mr Dave Pretty" (world’s champion axeman). There will also be exhibitions of wrestling -and boxing, side-,shows and refreshment booths. JUDGES.
