CRICKET.

PAEROA V. TE AROHA. CLOCK SAVES TE AROHA. The Paeroa Cricket Club just missed a win cn Saturday in the local domain, for when stumps were drawn at 6.301 Te Aroha, with only one wicket to fall, required 36 runs -o win. Te Aroha won / the toss and sent Paeroa in to bat. Shand and Halliday opened to the bowling of Frater and Wood. A bad start was made, Shand being put fb.w. in Wood’s first over. Furley then went in, and after a period of quiet play Halliday opened his shoulders and drove Wood for two 6’s and a four in one over. Furley also drove Wood for 4. The total rose tp 41, when Furley was caught at cover point off a full pitch. Martin took his place, and another very useful partnership ensued. Halliday quietened down again, but, t'he score mounted steadily to 73, when he .was well caught in the long field by Frater. Halliday played a good innings, showing sound defence, besides bringing off some good drives and leg sjhots. It is pleasing to see he has struck form. Richards scored 5 and was then bowled, and Farrow was run out for 2, when the score showed 83 for five.. Douglas helped Martin to add 17. With. G. Jenkinson in the score reached 116 before he was bowled. Martfh was last put. He played a very fine innings, which inc'uded one‘6 (a big hit off Lewis)’ and four 4’s, and he was at home with, all the bowlers tried. Martin makes the most of his reach, and during the Whole of his innings smothered the bowling with a straight bat. Te Aroha opened to the bowling of Richards and Shand. Scoring was slow, seven overs realising 7 runs, when Richards beat and bowled Frater. James joined Lewis, who was beaten and all but bowled several times by Shand, who was keeping an excellent length, but had wretched luck in repeatedly just missing the stumps’. Wood put a bit of life into the batting, but scoring was slow all through Te Aroha’s innings. The finish. was sensational. With three minutes to go .the score showed 92 for six wickets, but then Shand clean bowled Baine and Ratcliffe with successive balls, and two runs later Lewis was run out smartly by Rolton, nine wickets then being down for 94. Stumps were then drawn. Lewis showed the best form for Te Ardha. He showed stubborn defence in his innings of 31, though, perhaps, he might ihave scored more quickly. His innings included no fewer than twenty-three singles and four 2’s. The Paeroa bowling was very steady, and very few bad balls were s'ent down. All the bowlers tried to keep a good length, and Te Aroha had to figlh.t all the way to draw. A ; s an indication of the rate of scoring it might be mentioned that Paeroa scored 129 runs, off 26 overs, whereas Te Aroha’s 94 were scoiied off 42 overs.
