WAIHI BEACH ROAD.
MAINTENANCE QUESTION. Matteis pertaining to the Waihi Beach Road, and particularly as co maintenance, were before, the Waihi Borough Council at its monthly meeting last week. Replying to a request forinformation on the poipt the, clerk of; the Ohinemuri County Council (Mr Evans) submitted ,a statement setting forth in detail the rates collected by his council for the past three years on properties adjoining the Beach Road. These gave the total amoupt as £316. The writer also intimated that his council had passed a resolution approving the suggestion to erect a tollgate on the road, and had proposed that a joint petition from both councils’ be presented, to the Minister asking for permission tp erect a gate. The clerk further, suggested" that in the event of a tolk-gate being established a committee of three from each council be appointed ,tp control the gate, and expend the net revenue on ■the road.
Information was received from the various counties .written to by the town clerk as to the administration of toll-gates, principally in the Taranaki district. Some of .these showed that t,hc revenue collected frem t)ie toll-gates materially swelled the receipt's, in one instance as much as £2500 being received at a cost of £250It was moved by the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Callaghan, and carried : “That in view pf the receipt of cash collected during the last three years the Ohinemuri County Council be asked to remit to the Waihi Borough nuwil the balance after deducting a fair amount for administration which this borough will undertake to spend o,n that part of jthe road between the Tauranga Road and Hedge’s property. The Council agrees to the foreman conferring with the county engineer as to the best means of spending the money.” It was furthe.r decided to point put that the council had already spent close on £2OO on the road. In regard tp the proposals dealing with the toll-gate, it was decided to defer consideration of; same, at present. The matter came, up for discussion at the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council, oh Friday, when the reply was read from the Waihi Borough. clerk acknowledging the statement forwarded by the County Council showing that £316 had been collected on - the Beach Road during the last three years. He stated that his council had given the matter full consideration, and had also recently repaired some of the dangerous spots on that portion of the road between Tauranga Road and Hedge’s, and he was directed to ask if the county would be agreeable that the amount of rates' received, less fair administration and other expenses, say, £ll6, be handed over to his council for expenditure on the Plains portion of the road.. If the county could see its way to hand pver ,say, £2OO, his council would be agreeable that the county engineer should confer with the borough foreman as to the most advantageous manner of spending the money. If the county council was willing to hand over the amount mentioned the road could be put into first-class order before the Christmas holidays. What! they are asking us to pay over £2OO ! It is not the position of the county paying, but the riding, said Cr. Corbett. Or. Morgan : This' is not the only road in the riding. The chairman said thiat in the letter thed did not put th,? matter fairly. Cr. Corbett: What amount per year is fovied ? The clerk said that the rate levied was only £133. The Chairman : This is a pleasure resort for the Waihi Borough. It was decided that the county could not entertain'the proposal put forward by the Waihi .Borough, and the clerk was instructed tp write accordingly.
