Perhaps the mpst valuable fragment of literature ever preserved in Australia is reproduced in the November issue of “Aussie,” It is the last sentence written by Henry Lawson—an incomplete sentence it is, and it was written only a few hours before his death. The M.S.S. finished with three small marks, which would appear to indicate that Lawson was . forced to stop on account of the ! shakiness' of his hand. The M.S.S. was being written for “Aussie,” and ' was the third of flip series of stories : which have been appearing in that paper under the title of The Casual ; Australian,”
The issue, as usual, is bright in verse, stories, jokes', and articles, and particularly interesting are the sketches of “Henry Lawson in Maoriland,” by Tom Mills', and “Two Poets” (a comparison of the lives ofl Kendall. and Lawson), by Gertrude Lawson (the poet’s sister). The illustrated portion ofi the magazine is represented by 50' humorous pictures, including a very attractive and laughable double page entitled “Dum Animals',” by R. G. Russom. The result of the “Aussie” Humour Compaign, whicihi was inaugurated to encourage a higher standard in Australasian humorous art and literature, appears in this issue of “Aussie.” The response to the competition was extraordinarily strong, and “Aussie” believes that he succeeded in his object of giving practical encouragement tp Australasian black-and-white artists to improve the standard of their work. Oyer 1500 MSS. were received during the three months, and although some of the work was hopeless, “Aussie” was able to discern a number of first-effort, writers whose .work w.as acceptable, and’pthers w!ho showed much, promise and that they were worthy of encour- ! agemen t and guidance. The response by the artists was '■ even more satisfactory than that by ' the writers, Over 1000 drawings were received, and the work ofj between 60 ■ and 70 different Australasian .artists j appeared during tllie three months.
