DISTRICT NEWS.

NETHERTON. SCHOOL CONCERT. Greater success could not have been anticipated than that which attended the school concert and dance held in the Netherton Hall last evening. The hall was profusely decorated with greenery, streamers, and flags, while the attendance was modestly estimated at 300, that number including Nga--tea, Kerepeehi, Hikutaia, and Paeroa visitors. Mr C. H. Potter, chairman, said it was the largest number he had seen in the local hall, and such a great success was very gratifying. The concert programme, which commenced sharp at 9 p.m., was au excellent one, and the large audience showed its appreciation in the usual style. A hunting chorus by the school children opened the concert, to the success of which the children, Paeroa and local talent, contributed. The neat appearance of the young ones, and the effective style in which they rendered their items, reflected grea: credit, on .their parents and instructors. The recitation by one little girl (Dulcie Bourne), whose warning was “The Goblins ’ll get-offer," was particularly good, while the childrens swing song, and .the chorus. “Only a baby," were greatly appreciated. Of the adult performances those of Mr Furley’ (Paeroa), were perhaps the most popular, particularly with the younger section of the audience, especially when he told “Mary Anu” to “Go to Jericho with your Rag-a-time,” and when he sang of when he was a boy. Mr E. Edwards (Paeioa) also delightful solos. Amongst the other contributors to the most enjoyable programme were Mesdames Adam, E. Smith, Misses Richmond, Daisy Bayliss, Haze. Johnson, and J. Wakeham. The accompanists were Mrs E. Potter, Misses L Halligan, Sarjant, and Jones. After the supper, interval dancing was the music beipg supplied by Mrs' E. Potter. Miss Halligan obliged with an extra. Mr D. Hibbs was M.C., The proceeds of the entertainment are to be..devoted to the school funds, and it is anticipated that the financial result will be £l5. WAITAKARURU. POLITICAL ADDRESS. Mr W. A. Allen, Liberal-Labpur candidate for. the Thames electorate, addressed a large gathering of Waitakaruru electors on Tuesday evening, Mr C. W. Harris occupying the chair. Mr Alien’s address .was on similar lines as already reported in our columns. The candidate at the end of ffjs speech invited questions, but none were forthcoming. The meeting .ended with a vote of thanks being carried to Mr Allen and to the chair, • BEACON LIGHTS.. The Marine Department," through the Public Works Department, intends to place two beacon lights at the mouth of the Waitakaruru Stream. Arrangements ape being made to have the work done immediately,. THE DOMAIN. In reply to a request by Mr C. W. Harris, chairman of the recently, formed Domain Board, the Minister of Lauds (the Hon. D. H. Guthrie) has forwarded plans Of the 10-acre Government reserve which will, the Minister stated, be soon gazetted as a domain. The Minister also advised that the Board could commence fencing operations' immediately. In connection with the domain improvements, the subscription lists are reported to have been largely subscribed to. The recent picture benefit night realised over £lO. z TENNIS. Keen interest is being displayed locally in the tennis club, which this season .has a large quota of members. 'Games with other clubs are being arranged, and the first inter-club fixture takes place to-mprrqw with Kopuarahi. TRAVELOGUE. Miss Louise Mack gave an interesting lecture and showed moving pictures of her travels to a large audience in the Waitakaruru Hall cn Wednesday evening. PIPIROA. DAIRY FARMERS’ UNION. Mr A. E. Fear, organising secretary for the Dairy Farmers’-Union, addressed the Pipiroa settlers last Friday evening on the aims and Objectsof the new body. It was decided toform a branch of; the union and to’ elect Mr F. Wallis president and Mr C. W. Parfitt secretary. Messrs H. and J.~D,algety were elected to the’ committee, with power tp add. POLITICAL- ADDRESS. Mr. W. A Alien addressed the electors’ of Pipiroa last Friday, and was accorded a vote of thanks and confidence by the large number present.
