PIG FARMING.

STABILISING THE INDUSTRY. In connection with the activities of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Unicr. in relation to the pig industry, the directors of the New Zealand Meat Packing Company, together with the manager pfi the companys’ bank, were met the other day by Messrs P. JSmall (president) and N. Campbell and W. S. Carter (members) of the union, when an arrangement was arrived at for the formation of a subsidiary* company, which will, for 15 months, conduct the bacon departments of the New Zealand Meat Packing Company in the five centres; (says the Manawatu Standard). The taking over of the bacon department for the period stated would be, so a reporter was informed, on a rental basis with a right of purchase at its expiry. It is proposed that the business be conducted by a board representative of the dairy companies, which, with support from the Government, would buy pigs ready for the market. The option to purchase will be considered in a few months’ by the board, Mr Small and others having already found tjbe directors of several important dairy companies prepared to recommend the scheme to their suppliers. Within a short period the dairy companies will be requested to hold meetings of shareholders to-con-sider the matter. At tihe Kaupokbnui cheese factory on Saturday members of tihe executive of the Dairy Farmers’ Union attended a meeting, at which about 200 suppliers were present, and the position of the industry was discussed, After Mr Small had addressed the meeting on the operations of the Dairy Farmers’ Union tihe suppliers decided to support the proposed formation pf the new company. It is considered by those interested in the movement that following the settlement of some technicalities, this initial attempt to stabilise the Dominion’s pig fanning industry will be successful!.
