TURUA TOWN BOARD

ADJUSTMENTS WITH COUNCIL.

ASSISTING ROADS UPKEEP. At the Hauraki Plains County Council meeting on Monday some light was thrown upon the agreement arrived at with regard to the adjustments between the Turua Town Board and the Hauraki Plains County Council, as a result of the hearing pf the' case before Mr B. A Meek, Government auditor. THE CLERK’S REPORT. The clerk (Mr E, Walton) reported as foiltows: “The committee appointed met the Board with regard to the adjustments of accounts when Mr Meek presided. The adjustment was on the lines 1 of the previous agreement. At the same time the question o>f what arrangement should be come to for the control of the roads in the town district was discussed. Your representatives pointed out that from statements credited to the Town Board the impression had got abroad that the Council had broken faith with the Board.

“The board members present undertook that the following resolution, drawn up by Mr Meek, should be passed by the Board, namely :

“ ‘That this Board regrets to learn that statements attributed to its members have lead to an impression that the Hauraki Plains County Council had broken faith with the Turua Town Board in the matter of an agreement between the two bodies', and desires to 'assure the Hauraki Plains County Council that the Turua Board members have not at any time entertained that idea, and, further, that the Board desires' to express its appreciation of the spirit in which it was met by the Council’s committee at Thames on November 2, 1922.’

"After this was clone your committee, recognising the position of the Board, passed the following resolution, drawn up Mr Meek: “ ‘That this committee of the. Hauraki Plains’ County Council will recommend its Council to delegate its powers in connection with, the county roads in the Turua. Town district to the Turua Town Board, in accordance with clause 4 of draft agreement, and will further recommend the most generous assistance the Council can afford! towards the .upkeep of the roads.’

“Your Committee also recommends that after you have decided what assistance can be rendered the Board that the completion of the arrangements be left with the committee, with power to modify the prior agree<meht.”

Cr, Parfitt moved that the Council assist the Turua Town Board up to two-thirds of tiie general rates’ collectable in the area for the current financial year. Cr. Hayward asked if two-thirds was the utmost the Council coul.l help.

Mr Walton said whether the Council gave the Board £5O, £lOO, or £l5O it would not be enough for the roads. Cr. Harris, seconding the motion, said that if the Council handed the Board two-thirds they were treating the Board generously. If the Council gave more than twa-thirds the Council may not be treating the other ratepayers in the county fairly. It was stated that this was the limit of; the generous assistance the Council could give. The motion was carried.
