VALEDICTORY.

POPULAR POSTMISTRESSES. HIKUTAIA FUNCTION. A social gathering was held at the Hikutaia Hall on Wednesday evening Last, when presentations were made to Mrs Courtney, who has’ been postmistress at Hikutaia for the past seven years, and Miss O’Brien, assistant postmistress, Mr W. Alley, In presenting them with, a well-filled purse each, eulogised their services whilst in Hikutaia, and expressed general regret at their departure, at the same time wishing them health and prosperity in the future. Mrs Courtney, in responding to the presentation on behalf of Miss O’Brien and herself, apologised fpr the absence of her husband, and said she wished to sincerely thank Mr. Alley ■ for his -kind remarks and also the residents of Hikutaia for- their very generous presentations. Continuing, Mrs Courtney said she would like to especially thank Mi’s Martin, Mrs Corbett, and Mrs McSweeney 'for their particular kindness and help. Cheers were given for the recipients, and. For they are jolly good fellows” was sung witli musical honours. After the presentation the floor was’ cleared f.or dancing to the strains of Mr D, Fisher’s jazz band. Mr McSweeney carried out the onerous duties of M. 0., and everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
