DISTRICT NEWS.

NGATEA. THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Ngatea School Committee was held on Monday evening, Mr W. McDuff presiding. A letter from the Auckland Education Board in reply to the committee's request for an additional assistant teacher stated that it could not see its way to grant the request, as the attendance did not yet warrant it. PROPOSED HIGH SCHOOL'. When Mr T. W. Rhodes, M.P., addressed the local school children oh Friday he said that the children would scon have an opportunity of obtaining, secondary education by the estabis'hment of a district high school at Ngatea. TENNIS ON SUNDAY. At the Ngatea School Committee meeting on Monday evening Hie chairman. Mr W. McDuff, said he had been approached by a couple o£ tennis enthusiasts who requested that permission be granted to allow the playing of tennis on Sundays on the court in the school ground. The chairman asked for an expression of opinion from the committee.

There was considerable comment, on the matter, some of the members saying that they could .hot vote for a thing like that. It was not a good thing tp encourage. Obe of the committeemen said that if a person fulfilled his other obligations during the day a little recreation was not put of place on Sundays. No resolution was passed concerning the matter, but the general opinion appeared to be that it was' not advisable to encour--age the playing of tennis on the school court on Sundays. BAZAAR SOCIAL.

A dance, an aftermath/ of the recent bazaar for the hall funds, was held on Monday evening the object being to raffle the works of art competed for at the bazaar. Constable J. M. Devereaux was present at the drawing of the winning numbers, which were claimed by Messrs H. Regastie (two prizes), M. Martin, and J. Banks.

The evening, confined mainly to dancing was a vrey pleasant one, and was enjoyed by a large number, included among whom were visitors from Kerepeehi. Mrs Hendren supplied the music, and was assisted with extras by Mrs Costello, Misses RHilford, and Thompson. Mr P. Harris was M.C. Supper was supplied by the ladies.

A feature of the evening was a waltzing competition, in which a dozen couples competed. The prize, a cushion, went to Mr and Mrs I. Banks, Miss Smith and Mr Blythe being second.
