HEAVY MOTOR TRAFFIC.
PAEROA4WAIHI ROAD. At the County Council meeting yesterday Cr .Corbett drew the attention of the Council to the amount of heavy traffic on the Paeroa-iWaihi rOad to the detriment of the road, increased cost of repairs and maintenance, airl a decided loss to the Railway Department Cr. Corbett contended that heavy motor traffic on this ro.ad was Of np benefit to Paeroa. Only the shopkeepers of Waihi got any benefit out of having a good road, as the motor-lorries conveyed their goods there cheapen and quicker .than the railways could. In consequence the Waihi public could get cheaper goods and yqt the local ratepayers' h.ad to find the money to keep the roads in such condition that the heavy traffic could use them. “Only to-day,” said Cr. Corbett," information was received that the Railway Department was transferring the poster from Waikino because the carriage of goods had fallen off to such ah extern as to no longer warrant a porter at that station.” Cr. Corbett said he considered the present amount pf £25 for a. motor lorry license was totally inadequate as compared to the damage done to the roads, and he was decidedly In favour of the fee being increased substantially. The chairman said that the matter of heavy motor traffic had given him some concern, and he quite agreed that the licensing fee was not nearly sufficient, (recompense for the damage done to the roads by these vehicles, and he would like to see a bond entered- into by the owners of motor lorries and the Council, and then the local body would have a claim on the people causing the damage. Councillors Morgan and Johnstone also spoke in similar strain. The following resolution was moved by Cr. Corbett and carried unanimously : / “That the engineer be requested to keep a close supervsiion on the amount of heavy traffic on the Pae-roa-Waihi rbad, and that all excessive damage done be immediately reported to the Council, so that the amount of damage done can be recovered from the persons concerned.”
