LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
WAR MEMORIAL. WHAT HAS BECOME OF THE EFFORT ? Sir —About this time last year some prominent businessmen in Paeroa interested themseives in the collection for and erection of a Paeroa War Memorial. Spirited public appeals were made per medium of the press and by the organisers individuality ; collection lists were opened, and canvassers appointed ■tp systematically work the town and solicit donations. People who signified their willingness to contribute were asked to make a special effort to hand in the amount due not later than 23rd December last. This was done, despite the effort it meant to a number of people, and I have reason to believe quite a substantial sum was in this way collected. Now, what I would like to know is what has become of this money ? Is it invested in some inter-est-gaining proposition ? and, if so, who is-deriving the benefit ? Surely the time is mor,e than ripe, and I am not unreasonable in seeking information as to what has been done with the money- Has the project fallen through? Those who gave willingly and gladly and to the best of their abilities to such a worthy cause do no for one second begrudge the effort it was to find the money just before Christmas, but think it a fair thing that they should be advised as to what is doing with regard to the War Memorial. CURIOUS.
