accident. Towards the end of last week Mr M. C, Smith met with an accident that might have resulted in much more serious consequences. As he was' unloading his milk waggon something startled the horses. They iin u mediately made off, arid the suddenness of their advance caused Mr ' Smith to fall head first to the ground. " He was followed by two cans filled with whey, one of which fell on him, damaging the ribs. A visit to the doctor resulted in a. plaster of Paris jacket and an 'brder to rest until the damage was made good. The latter order, to one pf Mr Smith’s energetic temperament, will not be relished. . SOCIAL. A very enjoyable and largely attended social apd euchre tournament was held in the Hikutaia Hall last Thursday night in aid of the Alley Memorial Park Bazaar fund, The decorations which remained from a former social contrasted splendidly with! the spring dresses of the ladies and the more sombre garniture of the gentlemen, many of the dresses being greatly admired as beautiful specimens of the dressmakers’ art. The floor, as usual, was in captial order, while Mr Shine, as M.C. carried out his onerous duties in an admirable - manner. Mr Williams' Orchestra supplied splendid music, so that, with the bountiful and recherche supper provided by the ladiesj, all that go to make an enjoyable evening were present. The ladles, wfhp dispensed the good things that comprised the dainty commissariat,, Mesdames Alf. Alley, - Asher, Avery, Brash, and Littlejohn,, won many encomiums, while the “waiters” ‘seconded their efforts admirably. The euchre tournament proved most popular, the competition resulting in several ties. The winners were found in. Miss Agnes Alley and Mr M„ C. Smith, Mrs W. H. Alley and: Mr J. Millen annexing the prizes allotted tp the least successful- The Bazaar Committee is to be congratulated pn the financial success of the social, which iietted something over £lO. The- presentation of the prizes was made by Mr W. H Alley. - DANCING CLASS. The Saturday evening dancing class continues with unabated fervour, the attendance fully attesting the popularity of its institution.
PLAIN AND FANCY DRESS BALL. The committee in charge of the plain and fancy dress ball to be held in the hall on the evening bf Thursday, November 2, are bitsily . preparing for a great night, which, they hope will prove the dancing event of the season. BAZAAR ART UNION.
The permit for the art' union to be held in connection with the forthcoming bazaar has arrived, and the tickets are commanding a ready sale. The first prize, a natural g’old nugget, v.alued at over £2O, appears a splendid bait with Which to capture the nimble shilling.
