TELEPHONE EXTENSIONS.
AUCKLAND - TAURANGA DIRECT. PAEROA’S CENTRAL POSITION. Telephonic communication in these parts has been receiving some attention during the past twelve months. A. great deal of. work had to be accomplished before the Paeroa-Ppkeno-Auckland line was completed. The completion of this line has enabled the Bay of Plenty to be linked up. Tauranga is now able to get Auckland direct, whereas formerly the call had to De switched through Rotorua, Cambridge, and Hamilton, Arrangements are now on foot to allow Whakatane, Te Puke, and also Taneatua to get Auckland through Paeroa. One of the Auckland-Pokeno-Paeroa, was extended to Tauranga on Monday last. This is really a connection of the three existing lines, and gives direct communication between Aucklapd and Tauranga, and does away with the switching at Paeroa.
A line is to be constructed from Tauranga via Ohiwa Beach to Opotiki, and then that town will switci through Tauranga to Paeroa. The new changes are certainly going to be a big improvement, and will place the Bay oj Plenty many miles nearer Auckland by ’phone. Apart, from this fact the weary wait that now has of necessity to take place will be done .away with, and these centres will be able to get Auckland in a few minutes, as against hours that users of the ’phone have at times to wait.
