DISTRICT NEWS.

WAITAKAIWRU. THE DOMAIN. Tlie first meeting of the Waitakaruru Domain Board was held on Friday evening. The following were present: Messrs C. W. Harris, S. P. Caie, R. T. Williams, T. J. Beaver, and R. A. Otter. Mr Harris was elected chairman and Mr Otter hon. secretary. Mr Harris explained that the board had not yet been gazetted, but while in’ Wellington recently .he, had been tqld by the Minister that blue board could go ahead and prepare the grounds for the coming summer. Representatives of local sports bodies attended to confer with the board with regard to preparing the reserve for the summer. The sports bodies decided to pool their available funds to put the ground in order. It was decided.to ring-fence tlie Domain area. The first work to be undertaken by way of improving the ground is to prepare tennis courts for the coming season. It Was decided that concrete courts be laid. down. It was also decided to approach Mr H. A. Hamilton, picture proprietor, with a request to make arrangements for a picture benefit night, the proceeds of which will be devoted to the improvement of the domain ground. Subscription lists are also to be issued, soliciting the co-operation of settlers of the district. NGATEA. TENNIS CLUB. The committee of the Ngatea Tennis Club met last evening, Mr R. E. Jamieson presiding. It was decided , to officially open the season on October 28 and invite representatives of other clubs on the Plains to be present. Arrangements were made for a dance to be held in the evenihg.

The inauguration of ladder, competi-. ~~ tions was decided on, and a resolution was passed tp admit to membership schoolboys between the ages of 12 and 15 years at a subscription of 5s each. FACTORY OUTPUT. A record shipment pf butter for one boat from Ngatea was made yesterday, when the s.s. Onerpa took a.way 999 boxes Last week, the first week in October. 1677 boxes (42 tons) were sent away. This is a great increase on the figures for a siniilar period last year, when 921 boxes (23 tons) were shipped. This abnormal increase is due in some respect to the Shelly Beach and Huirau Road supplies being sent to the Ngatea factory, but irrespective of this the increase is about 25 per cent. , The fitters are at present installing additional machinery, which has been on hand at the factory for some time. ELECTRIC POWER. The local factory manager, Mr H. E, Harvey, has been informed that the electric power will be switched on at the factory in about a fortnight’s time. It is understood that the Power Board intends to raise the wires on the Ngatea bridge another ten feet. / WAIKINO.

CATHOLIC SOCIAL. Ou Friday last a social, and dance was held in the Victoria Hall in aid of funds for the Catholic Church here. The function was a successful one, there being over 150 present. Ths first dance took place at 8 o’clock to the music of Mrs F. S. Budd, of roa, who the »vening, ahd was thanked by those present for the able manner in which she performed her duties. The duties of Ms.C. were ably carried out by Messrs McSweeney and. J. Jesney. A euchre tpurnment also took place for valuable prizes, under the supervision of Mr A. Southberg. The winners were Mrs F. Hicks and Mr A. Stapleton. A prize of a turkey was also secured by Mr Stewart Currie, Waikino. A spot dance took place for two prizes, Mr E. Johnson being on the spot, declared Clarence Robertson and Agnes Smith the winners. At 1.1 o’clock and adjournment' for supper was made, which was enjoyed by all. Extras were played by Migs Stevens, Waihi, and Misses Shaw and Bell. Great credit is due to the organiser of the function, Mrs F. Hicks, who worked hard both here, Waihi, Karangahake, and elsewhere to make i: such a success. She was assisted by Mrs Lithgow and Miss Crimmins. Visitors were present from Waihi, Paeroa, Karangaliake, and Auckland.

ROWLING AND CROQUET CLUB, The official opening of the Waikino Bowling and Croquet Club took place on Saturday afternoon under unfavourable weather conditions. The president of the Bowling Club, Mr J. H. G. Banks, in declaring the Bowling Club open . for. the season, welcomed the visiting players from Te Aroha and Paeroa, apd regretted the absence oft the Waihi Bowling Club. He stated that among the visitors was Mr J. Truscott, a late and active member of the club, who had come from Auckland for the occasion.

Airs Banks then bowled the first jack amidst applause, and the members and visitors then commenced the initial -Raines in the rain.

The croquet lawns were then declared open by the president. Mrs IlHewitt then made the first hoop amid applause. A vote of thanks was given to the club by the Te Aroha and Paeroa Clubs.

During the afternoon refreshments were served by the ladies, and many thanks were given to them for their kind attention.

At the finish the president called for three cheers for the visiting bowlers, which were duly given.

TURUA. ROAD METALLING, The Turua Town Board is at present improving its portion of the Hauraki Road with 90 qubic yards of metal, 50 yards of which has. been donated by Mar R. W. Bagnall- Considerable improvement has already been shown in that road. There is also a quantity of lighter material to be put on the footpaths,
