PAEROA BOWLING CLUB.

OPENING DAY. MARRED BY SHOWERSThe Paeroa Bowling Club seems to be most unfortunate in the selection of opening days as regards weather, and last Saturday was no exception to the rule. However, despite the drizzling rain and somewhat unpleasant conditions, local bowling enthusiasts, their wives and friends and visiting bowlers, b.egan to turn up shortly after 2 p.m. About 2.30p.m. Mr A- G. Garry, vice-president of- the Club, gathered the crowd together, and in a few remarks said he was very sorry it had fallen to his lot to open the season instead of Mr F. J. Wells, this year’s president, who was unable to attend owing to being very ill in Auckland. However, added the speaker, information had been received that morning that Mr Wells was on the high road to recovery, and this was indeed good news to his many friends among the bowling fraternity. Mr Garry heartily welcomed the visiting bowlers on behalf of the club, and trusted that they would enjoy a happy afternoon’s play. The first “jack” was then thrown down by Mrs Garry, and the 1922-23 bowling season in P.aeroa was declared open amidst applause. Five full rinks were then selected from the visitors, representing Thames, Hikutaia, and Waikino clubs, together with the local bowlers. The fates were considerate enough to permit of the full heads being played throughout, resulting in a win for the president’s team by the narrow margin Of one point, against the vice-president’s team. Despite the weather and hpavy going some close finishes resulted. The large marquee was erected adjacent to the pavilion, and a willing band of lady helpers, upder the direction of Mesdames G. H. Taylor and Garry, prettily decorated the tea tables in the Club’s colours (purple and gold) with ribbons, and vases of wisteria and eschscholtzias effectively carrying out the colour scheme. A delicious atfernoon tea was served by the ladies, whose willing help added materially to the comfort of thie bowlers and the success of the afternoon generally. At the conclusion of the play, about 5.30 p.m., the vice-president thanked the visitors for their attendance and the ladies for their assistance, after which cheers were called and heartily given for the visitors and the ladies. Representatives from the visiting clubs briefly responded and cheers were exchanged.
