WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
engineer’s report. The following report was submitted to the Ohinemuri County Council at its meeting yesterday afternoon by the .engineer, Mr E. Shaw : Proposals for metalling 15 chains of Old Tauranga Road were forwarded to the Public Works Department for approval under subsidy £ for £• The proposals for metalling portion of Paeroa-Te Aroha Road under subsidy £ fA £ between the railway crossing and Fitzgerald’s have been approved and authority given. 1 would ask if it is the intention of the Council to call tenders for this work at' an early date. It was resolved that tenders be called at once. Access tp Section 30.—Notice has been received frojn the Public Works Department asking for proposals *b be sent in for the expenditure of the £5O on this road. I interviewed Mr Franklin re the above, and pointed out to him the other proposed roads which would give him access. After viewing the various routes we. found the most suitable tp give access- co Mr Franklin’s ihomestead was by the old survey along the Waitawheta stream. The surveyed road ends ahis boundary, and from this point to his home he will (have a considerable amount of work to do before he can get access by vehicle. I propose to lay this work off at an early date. Re Jasper Browne's .application for closing the present surveyed road between his section and McLean’s and giving in place thereof a. road througn the centre of his section, as shown on plan which acco.mpa.nied his application, I would recommend that his application be accepted, provided he pays all legal, and other expenses connected with same. Application accepted. Application for Repairs to Pevreal’s Road. —This length of road runs at right angles to the Paeroa-Te Aroha Old Road in a straight line to the hills, and ip consequence the grades in some instances are very steep, and are difficult to deal with. Certain portions require regrading and metalling, at a cost of approximately £6O. There is a letter which will come before you to day from a settler who resides at the far end of this road offering in the near future to deliver crushed metal at a reasonable rate to the Council. As the summer is approaching, the metalling portion could stand down for the present and await the above offer. The county foreman for Mangaiti riding, is at present engaged making necessary repairs to this road. I made an inspetcion of the bridges on the Old Te Aroha Road through the gorge. The life of some of them is short but with minor repairs they can be kept go;ng for a couple of years. The road is passable for a car, but in places it is very rough, particularly on the southern side of the hill, where there is little or no traffic. It wpuld be wise when any of these bridges become unsafe that they be pulled down and crossings made. The report was adopted as read.
