SITE FOR A HOSPITAL.

THE KEREPEEHI MOVEMENT. A REBUFF AT NGATEA. Kercpeehi’s solicitation fpr. donations towards the fund tor the purchase of a hospital site at Kerepeehi received a mixed reception at the last meeting of the Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union. A .lejtter was read from Mr J. Jenkins, the secretary of ,a committee at Kerepeehi, stating that at 0, public meeting it was decided to make the necessary arrangements lor the purchase of th.e section the Government had reserved for a hospital site. “With that objeqt in view,” the letter continued, ‘‘l was instructed to forward subscription lists to the various branches of the Farmers’ Uniop on the Plains, to have support on so important a matter and. one which will benefit the whole 1 of the Hauraki Plains. The Thames Hospital Board highly recommends the site in question, and, further, this movement has their entire support. The purpose in forwarding . the attached list is to urge that your, branch take the matter up and appoint one or more of your members to kindly do all in their? power with a view to having this list w.-ll supported.” A list had also been sent to the Ngatea post office.

Mr W. McDuff said that Kerepeehi had been ridiculing Ngajtea “hawking” £5OO around for a memorial high school. If Ngatea could raise £5OO for that purpose Kerepeehi should be able ..to raise £2OO for a hospital site. Mr W. J. Clare maintained th,at if the site were purchased it would be years before they would get a hospital on it and those contributing would not benefit. It was one thing to get a site and another to get a hospital on it. Ngatea, he said, was more central, and it was their duty to look after the people 011 the western side of tihe Plains.

The general opinion concurred with that of t'he first two speakers. Mr Walton moved that in the opinion of the meeting the hospital was not necessary at Kerepeehi. Mr McDuff seconded, and the motion was carried unanimously.
