MEETING OF COUNCIL. J . The monthly meeting of the Thames Coun;ty Council was held on Wednesday, there being present: Crs. H. Lowe (chairman), Blackett, Nicol, Faithfull, Cox, Brunton, Alley, and McCormick. Mr L. C. Gilbert, Matatoki, made application for tihe Council’s grader to work for one month to form a new road. The clerk said he had informed the writer that the Council’s machinery was not for Ihire. The Mines Department advised that no subsidy could be granted in connection with Messrs Mclnerney and Wood’s application for inspecting assistance and that t'he application must accordingly be declined, Mr H. J. Clark asked the Council to do something to Omahu Road. —Tine letter was' received. Mr A. E. Jones applied for permission to have 60 yards of metal from the Omahu quarry. The matter was left wi,th the riding members. Tihe Mines Department, agreed to a rent on the James McNeil Agnew quartz claim to Is an acre for six months. Mr J. Fisher, Whangamata, advised that he had impounded some wild horses running on his place and had written to the poundkeeper regarding same, but had received no reply. It was decided that the writer he notified of the nearest pound. Messrs Smith and Johnson complained of stray cattle at>uru. The cattle, they had been informed, belonged to the poundkeeper. It was decided to send a copy of the letter to the poundkeeper apd, ask for an explanation. DEVIATIONS. Mr C. D. Wright asked the Council to urge the Public Works Department to make one or two deviations on Croshie's Settlement track. ’The chairman said that if a road were constructed for vehicular it would open up a lot of country. It was decided to support the request. COAST ROAD. The Finance Committee's resolution to write to the Coromandel Coupty Council for further suggestions for the 'toll gate on the Coast Road was adopted. A BAD ROAD. A number of settlers petitioned tihe Council to look, into the condition of the Kauaeranga Road, which was in a bad state. ‘ The chairman said that that road was certainly pretty rough, and wanted seeing to. It was decided that the road be attended to. MATATOKI QUARRY, Mr F. E. Powell, reporting on the Matatoki Quarry said he had made the necessary investigations regarding the feasibility of working it. The Council had a good asset which could be easily worked. The cost of working the plant with electricity would be slightly less tlhan by the company’s own power. It was suggested that a tramway be used with either a locomotive or horses. Or. Cox suggested that the Hauraki Plains County Council should join them in working the quarry. Cr. Faithfull was of the opinion that the Plains County Council would join them. Another councillor said that there was no other local body than the Haurak i Plains Counjty Council that would require much metal. The chairman moved that a special meeting be held for the purpose of considering this quarry question. The tramway would be a big expenditure for the amount, of metal the Council would use on its own. If it was found to be too big a proposition for that i council alone they could invoke aidJ from outside. It was decided to hold a special meeting in a fortnight’s time, WHANGAMATA. It was decided to write to the Public Works Department and ask What was going to be done in connection with the Whangamata wharf. The clerk was instructed to write to the Commissioner of Crown Lands with respect to a pound site at Wlhiangamata, HIKUAI WHARF. It was decided that estimates be prepared -for the extension of the wharf at Hikuai.
