HIKUTAIA NOTES.
SOCIAL. The last of the series of socials, organised by a committee consisting cf Mesdames Alf. Alley (convener), W. H. Alley, G. Avery. V. Brown, Maritin, and Shine, took place in the hall on Thursday night, and proved more successful, if that were possible, than any of the preceding three. The members had not spared themselves any trouble calculated to increase the enjoyment and pleasure of their patrons, and’this was evident in the decorations, which, consisting mainly of ferns, nikau and other greenery, with festoons of ribbons raidiating from brightly coloured balloons in all directions, proved most effective, the variegated colouring blending harmoniously with the bright dresses of the ladies, and contrasting well with the more sober garniture pf the gentlemen. The decorations were as simple as they were effective, and. reflect highly pn the artistic taste of the committee, the members of which were assisted by Mrs Morrow, Messrs G. Avery and Shine. The music, supplied by Mr Williams’ orchestra from Thames, was excellent, while the supper, purveyed by the local baker, was dainty and abundant. The MIC., Mr P. Corbett, was most assiduous, the floor being in capital order. In the euchre tournament Mesdames V. Brown, Corbett, Murdoch, M. C. Smith, and Miss Nellie Corbett 'had to play off —so keen was the competition —the lastmentioned winning by a very narrow margin. In the gentlemen’s competition Mr Samson cam? first. The first place for the greatest aggregate number of points made during the four tournaments was gainei by Miss Alice Ingham, Mr Alf.. Alley carrying off the gentleman’s prize. The committee is to be most highly congratulated on the success of its efforts, and the knowledge that the members have succeeded in doing more than they set out to do will fully compensate for. all the trouble, worry, and hard work entailed in promoting and carrying out a series of entertainments that have proved so enjoyable. A SUCCESSFUL DANCE. Judging by the attendance and the encomiums passed upon the management, the dance held in the hall on Saturday nighit was another huge success, the taking being over £6. CHEESE FACTORY. On the first of the month cheesemaking at the local factory was substituted for casein. The .alterations required, though numerous, were effected in good time, and- under the management of Mr Gllmeri everything was ready on for the change. The milk isupply at present is some 3000 gallons per diem. Tn the flush of the season between 4000 and 5000 gallons will be treated every day. even though some of the suppliers have gone in for home-separa-tion. RAINFALL. During September the rainfall, as recorded at the School, totalled 5.29 inches. Rain fell on eleven days, the other nineteen thus being rainless. The average -temperature as taken daily at noon in the shade was 504 F., the average barometric pressure being 30.06. ______
