TURUA, town board vacancy. Nominations to fiU a- vacancy on the Turua Town Board occasioned by the resignation of Mr E. Wliimp closed last week. Oply one nomination, that ofi Mr A. P. Gardiner, was received, and Mr Gardiner has been duly elected as a commissioner On the Town Board. POWER BOARD’S ACTIVITIES. ’ 'The Thames Valley Power -Board’s construction party is at present active in and around Turua. The heavy motor lorry is employed in carrying poles down the Orongo Road, s)milc other men are engaged in doing, the wiring in the township.' TENNIS CLUB. . There is every evidence that the Turua club will be strong again this season. Already it has a large quota of members, who are showing grea: enthusiasm- Last Saturday the courts presented a very busy scene with the large number of members who attend.: ed practice. TENNIS CLUB MEETING. The annual meeting of the Turua Tennis Club was held on Monday evening. •There was a good attendance of members. Mr D. G. McMillan was elected president and Mr !■ L. Brownlee re-elected ihon. secretary. It was decided to hold the official opening of the season pn October 14. Certain improvements to the courts were authorised. DRAINAGE BOARD. At the meeting of the Hauraki Dre inage Board the following were present: Mr G. Gray (chairman), D. G. McMillan, R. Baker, J. Mules, and J, EL ’Green (secretary). The clerk was instructed to take further legal steps to ptbain rates remaining unpaid; Accounts totalling £32 16s 9d were passed for payment. . , The N.Z. Dairy Company advised that thein own drain now completed and that they would make no further contribution to the Board. The secretary said ihe had received from the Government half the cost of cleaning and maintaining joint drains. ■ - ' The secretary was instructed to inform several settlers that their fences along the Board’s drains must be put in prder and that the Board would .riot, allow'water to be pumped from the Outlet drains. Where outlets were pot fenced the settlers concerned would be held responsible for damage done by cattle., - The work of putting in five chains of drain and of cleaning out the culvert across Towers’ drain was authorised so that 15 acres hear Towers’ outlet could be adequately drained. On. Mr Baker’s recommendation the . Board , decided to take over the outlet of Messrs Dally and Tasker’s drain beyond the: flood-gate. By making chains of; drain through the mud 20 ‘ chains, of drain could be saved. Mr Mules said 10 chains of Mr Williams’ drain outlet to the Jubilee drain had previously been cleaned by the Board but it was an old drain. It was decided that this drain would be a Board’s drain and would be cleaned Out immediately. LAND CLASSIFICATION. '. A letter was recieved by the Hauraki Drainage Soard at its last., meeting from~Messrs,„Bi*yan and Wallker (solicitors) on behalf of Mr W- M'Cowati, btating that Mr McCowatt'S land Iras wrpngly classified and that a re-classiflcatioh sihpuld be made. Tihe Board considered that Mri McCOwatt was getting full benefits from the Board’s outlets. The classification had been been decided uppn by the Court imd there could be ho alteration. OBITUARY. . , The death is announced of Mr Robt. McLean, who' passed away at his residence at Turua pn Monday afternoon. The late Mr McLean w as a prominent resident, taking a leading • part in local affairs. He was president of the football club and a leading member of other organisations. His presence in the community .will be sadly missed. KEREPEEHI. THE JAZZ The fascination for the jazz has crept into the midst of the dancing folk at Kerepeehi, and last Thursday a very successfftt class was held. It was arranged in only a few ’hours, but despite the short notice quite a large number of young folk attended and an enjoyable two hours; were spent. NGATEA. ORCHARD EAST ROAD. The metalling of the Orchard East z Road has been completed as far as it is at present intended to go. Some of the -workmen engaged on that work have been moved tp Kerepeehi. Though road has not been all metalled, the portion already done will be a great asset to the settlers along that road. BAZAAR FUNDS. The larlies pf Ngatea are at present working hard to. raise funds in order to organise a bazaar, the proceeds ofwhich will be devoted towards paying off the debt on the iihll. For this purpose a dance was held on Monday evening. .There was a fair attendance and a very enjoyable evening was spent, Mr J. Banks was M.C-, while Mesdames Potter and Hendren were responsible for the music. POLITICAL. Mr Whiteside, the Liberal-Labour candidate for the Thames electorate, was in Ngatea oh Monday organising for the forthcoming compaign.
