BRIDGES.

Sir, —Mr Walton’s report on the Kirikiri bridge makes interesting reading, but unfortunately all !his deductions are wrong. He admits that the Hauraki Plains Council acted on a letter, from some of the Thames people. who were not ratepayers. Such action was quite contrary to the spirit and intention of the Counties Act. This being the case, the ratepayers have a right to a. say in the matter, and the "moral obligation” is on the council to take a vote on the question. The resolution making all bridges a charge on the ratepayers of the whole county cannot be carried out. There is no provision in the Counties Act for borrowing money for such work without taking a poll. Section 119 of the Public Works Act cannot be made use of, and rightly so. If the Council feel that they are doing what is in the best interest of the ratepayers, and have their confidence, why fear a poll on the Kirikiri bridge, or for that matter any other bridge ? R. W. BAGNALL.
