WORKS JN THE COUNTY. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The following report was submitted to Monday's meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council by the engineer, Mr J. Higgins : Huirau Roaik The bad holes in the metal have been repaired, there being approximately 100 cubic yards of metal spread. Turn a Area. The worst holes in the road between Turua Town Board area and Net'herton riding have been repaired -with about 75 cubic yards from the Thames County quarry. Pinko Road. •piie settlers residing on the Pinko Road have subscribed £72 10s between. them for a supply of shingle for repairing bad hides in the ihetalThe Council, having promised to subsidise the amount., is doing the spreading and the knapping of large stones. Supplies are coming to hand slowly, and it will take 40 cubic yards to complete the most urgent work. County Repot, Tahuna. I have examined the area proposed to be acquired for a depot at Tahuna, and I find the price required to purchase is very reasonable and should realise as much if offered by auction. 1 would recommend that the offer be accepted.. WHs.oti’s Road:. The contractor has not yet completed his work on this road, and I would recommend that his contract, be cancelled and completed to specification and the cost for. doing same be charged against his contract. T’atcttong'a Main Road. J find that a small bridge north of Patetonga township is becoming very dangerous for heavy traffic, and I would recommend that provisions be made, if possible to have a new culvert put in. The work would cost about £5O. Talnma-MotrfiinsviHe Road. Tenders for the supply and delivery of 1000 cubic yards of metal (more or less) have been called, to close on the 9th. itist. T called at the Ohinemuri County office on the 2nd inst. to gel schedule of prices of work let by the county engineer prior to the formation of this county. The clerk has promised to confer with the engineer, and when 1 receive the particulars I shall irnine'dately apply to the Public Works engineer for a subsidy. Tahuna-Paeroa Road. Tenders for forming 20 chains of this road were called. Pekapekji Road!. Plans have been prepared for forming one mile 75 chains of the above road, and I shall be pleased to receive authority to call tenders for same, Orongo Road. In response to the settlers' request I have, in company with your chairman. inspected this road and compiled estimates for scarifying and removing old metal, reforming, rolling, and metalling portion of the road between the town boundary and Orongo boundary. The proposed work measures 122 chains in length, and it is proposed to lay the metal 10 feet wide by a depth of 9 inches. The estimated cost of tlie work is £2400. The repairs at the Turua end of this road have progressed very sloWly, Messrs Foote Bros, having failed to deliver the two puntloaels of metal ordered about the beginning of August. I have now made arrangements witli Mr G. Keath to delivei; the metal, and I hope that a more constant supply will be maintained, Waitakarurii Stream Road. The contract kit to Mr A. P. Williams for cleaning out the drain is now completed. Tordmpe Road* I have examined the bridge previously referred to on the above road, and would' recommend that a set of 30in concrete pipes be put in to replace the old structure, the cost of which will amount to about £4O. Wiarepaa Ferry Roads. I have arranged with the Thames County Council to supply free of charge one punlload of metal for the two approaches to the ferry, this council to convey the metal from the Kanaeranga quarry landing ami spread same on the roads. Orebarfi East Road. I have examined the road fronting Mr H. Johnstone's farm, and I find that the material taken from the drain if spread from the outer edge would be a distinct benefit to the road. This, however, is not. an urgent matter from a roads point of view, and in any case, seeing that Mr Johnstone is going to derive an immediate benefit he 'should, in my opinion, contribute towards the cost of the work. i’atictonigaj-Waitakarurii. Plans for constructing McDonald’s bridge ami forming approaches to same have been prepared and submitted to the Bands Department ehj gineer for approval during the next t few days. In the meantime I shall require authority to call tenders for the work, returnable at the next council meeting. Tn addition to the above I have put a man on for a few days to repair the road between Torehap.t and Kaibere. Nethcrton Main Road.

• The 150 cubic yards of metal to be delivered by Foote Bros, have noi eome to hand. In consequence I had to repair the worst holes with 50 cubic yards of Karangahakc metal. The latter was much too costly, but i has to some extent temporarily improved tlie. situation. Turua Milin Road-

The road in the town board area south of Turua has received 25% cubic yards of metal for repairing bad hples. This work had to be done

before effecting repairs at the southern end of the Turua riding. General.

Tlie services of the tiaetpr and grader will be dispensed with in a few days, and. will be available for works in Turua. and Nethcrton ridings.
