DISTRICT NEWS.
KEREPEEHI. PROPOSED HOSPITAL. About a dozen local settlers met Mr W. E. Hale, a member of the Thames Hospital Board, when he visited Kerepeehi on Saturday on business in connection with a proposal to provide a hospital at Kerepeehi. It was stated that a certain sum had been guaranteed for its erection. It was decided that the hospital matter be brought up at a public meeting, to be called at some date in the near future. TURUA. SAFETY ON THE WHARF. Sunday’s sad drowning accident naturally makes one ponder whether the new wharf with its conveniences for launch passengers could be slightly improved upon at very ...little cost so that the landing stage will be made safer than it is at present. While launches are lying at each side of the stage it is safe enough for children, but when it is deserted, as it apparently was last Sunday, it is particularly dangerous to human iUfc, as Sunday’s accident has proved. Round the edge Of the landing stage could be swung chains, which could be easily hooked off when a launch came alongside to take on or set down passengers. This would give a greater degree of safety than what is offered at present. HUIRAU ROAD. Among the improvements to the roads round Turua it is noticed that the Huirau Road has been receiving much required attention.. One settler recently said they would J)ot be satisfied till the children could go to school on roller skates. There is quite a little amount of building going on along the Huirau Road in the shape Of houses and cowsheds. Some of the settlers have made provision for the electric light and have their electric motors already on the site, but there are no signs of electric power poles being erected along the road. VALEDICTORY, Mr and Mrs Bogue, who are leaving the district, were farewelled at an evening held at the residence of Mr W. Madgwick, who on behalf Of the local settlers presented Mrs Bogue with a handsome cheque, which, said Mr Madgwick, was accompanied with, best wishes of happiness and success. NGATEA. THE DOMAIN. At a recent meeting of the Ngatea Mutual Improvement Society Messrs Jamieson and Hemmings, op behalf of the Tennis Club, solicited the society’s co-operation in an endeavour to obtain a sports ground for Ngatea. The society was sympathetic with the proposal, and decided to give the movement every support. TENNIS BALL. The takings at Tuesday’s tennis ball amounted to £26 15s. THE TENNIS SEASON. The local tennis club is making preparations for an early, start and the court on the school grounds is being put in order. It is intended to endeavour to organise a strong club this season, and with a little effort may be strong enough to compete for the Laidlaw clip.
