PAEROA SAWMILL.

A sawmill capable bf turning out up to 8000 feet per day is now being erected on Station Road, and the proprietor hopes to have everything in readiness to be in full swing by Monday next. Some time back Mr Phillips had intended to erect the mill in Paeroa, but diverted it to Komata Reefs road, thinking that it would be more suitable in that locality. He now finds that it would be more convenient to have the logs brought into the mill, and has removed the plan*, to a site on Station Road. The plant is to be up-to-date, and includes a vertical breakdown with a seven-foct gate capable of cutting up up logs any length with a seven-foot width. There is also to be a breast bench running off the same shaft as the vertical saw and later on a planing machine. The building will, be 50 by 100 feet, a portion being ah’ady erected. The vertical travelling frame is all solid heart of kauri, and is so constructed to give a minimum of handling of the logs. Owing to the wet nature of the ground a good deal of filling is necessary, and this work is being done .at the present time. A short tramline will be put down from the- mill to the timber yard, wh’c’h is some 200 yards from the mill.

Mr Phillips is very sanguine pfi his prospects. and has one order alone to cut 60,000 feet. He is prepared t> purchase logs from any part of the district, and already has a large number awaiting the completion of the erection of the breakdown saw:. An office is to be erected at the entrance of the mill on Station Road. In purchasing logs he does not confine himself to any, particular kind so long as they are millabie. This new line ofi industry should prove a valuable asset to fhe town, judging by the bevy of workers already getting the mil] in readiness.
