FARMERS’ UNION.
NGATEA BRANCH. A short meeting of the Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held on Saturday in the Public Hall, Mr W. G. Hayward presiding. STRAYING CATTLE. The secretary (Mr C. W. Shultz) read a letter from the Hauraki Plains Gounty Council asking for specific Instances of straying cattle along the river road from the factory to Rawe Rawe, as complained of by the branch. The matter was left with Mr. Hayward to report at the next meeting. ORCHARD ROAD EXTENSION.
Mr E. Taylor, resident lands drainage engineer, met the branch members in connection with the proposal to extend the Orchard Road to the western hills at Torehape. Mr. Taylor explained that there was no possible hope of the road being constructed till the WaitakaruruMnukoro canal was put through. It would be too costly to cart clay from the 'hills for the road construction, wliicn by that mean's would cost £5OOO a mile. When the canal is put through the spoil frfom that work could be used for the road formation. It could be trucked from the canal at a much less cost, than by obtaining it from the hills. PIPING IN TOWNSHIP.
Regarding the suggestion by the branch that the drains in the township should be piped, Mr Taylor said his Department could not undertake
that work, which must be done by a town board or borough council.
