VETERINARY CLUB.

FARMERS’ COMMITTEE MEETING.

THE HOUSING PROBLEM.

The first meeting of the recently elected committee of the Farmers’ Veterinary Club was held in Mr ’3. Walton’s office at Ngatea on Tuesday. Mr A. J Andrews (chairman of the provis’oual committee) occupied the chair. There were present: Messrs R. T. Williams (Waitakaruru), C. W. Parfit’ and F. Wallis (Pipiroa), W. Wallace (Kaihere), G. T, Davidson and L. Rowntree (Ngatea). Mr Costello, the chosen veterinarian, and Mr E. Walton, solicitor, were also present.

Mr Andrews said that since. the general meeting he, with Messrs Davidson and Rowntree, had consulted with Mr Walton for the purpose of completing arrangements with Mr Cbst, ello. They had also considered rules for the club, and Mr Walton had prepared rules, which' he would submit to the meeting.

Mr Parfitt asked for details of business done to date.

Mr Andrews said the club had to pay the organiser about £4l. The membership to date was 96, of which 86 were financial. Mr Parfitt asked if it was suggested that the club would find a residence for the veterinarian.

Mr Andrews: No. That question would have to be settled. The housing problem was a big question. He thought ways and means could be devised to establish Mr Costello in a house. If temporary housing facilities could be arranged the housing problem could be settled later. The site for a house had been discussed, but that was all. He suggested that the club should issue debentures: A considerable sum of money may possibly be raised among, the club members. The committee had in view a house which could be used temporarily by the veterinarian. Mr R. T. Williams asked if there was any possibility of obtaining support from the other side of the river. Mr Andrews: Yes.

Mr Williams was o,f tire opinion thi t *he £5 per member would not be sufficient for the club, and if the members were asked for more they may be disappointed. Mr Davidson said it was not good policy for the organiser to canvass in the Turua club’s area, but lie knew of some who would be joining voluntarily from that area. Mr Wallace said the Kaihere people were pleased with .the nomination of Mr Costello, and had a high regard for his services. The speaker asked if Mi Costello would be prepared to accept the position if no solution was fount 1 to the housing problem. Mr Costello said it would hot be satisfactory.

Mr Wallace thought 'that as a temporary measure, and until the club was more firmly established, Mr Costello could continue to live in Patetonga.

Mr Costello said he would be prepared to do so. He would be willing to continue in anticipation of the housing problem being relieved in the near future.

The committee decided to take the necessary steps to provide a house for Mr Costello. FINAL The agreements between the club and Mr Costello were read, and ars briefly that the veterinarian confine his duties to the club alone, for which he is remunerated according to an offer made to him by the club’s representatives. The veterinarian is allowed no outside practice, except under circumstances laid down in the agreement. He will supply and dispense medicines for the club members. He will deliver one lecture a quarter in each district. Final arrangements were made and the rules of the club drawn up- The election of officers was left to a later meeting.
