As an instance of the high freights which are strangling enterprise in Marlborough, when Messrs R. F. Gonlter, J. Barry, and William Smith were In Wellington they watched the unloading of some thousands of, cases of benzine from a steamer from San Francisco. The freight from San Francisco to Wellington, they were informed, worked out at Is 5d per case. On returning home Mr. Smith received delivery of ten cases of 1 benzine which he had ordered from Wellington. The freight front Wellington to Blenheim was over 2s 7d per case. If (remarks the “Express”) benzine cjui bo brought the thousands of miles from San Francisco for Is sd, what is the reason for 2s 7d charge for the 52-miie trip across the Strait'? While Wellington struggles with milk in bottles (says a writer in the Dominion) Italy solves the milk question by the simple process of driving the cows through the streets and milking direct into the consumer's jug as required. In quite good fla*? in Naples the fresh egg problem is solved by the simple expedient of keeping the fowls in one’s bedroom. This also ensuncs the family rising at cock-crow inthe morning. For those whom the roosters fail to awaken there, is always the bellowing of; the perambulating dairy herd in the street below to assist in heralding th 5 morn Some fussy foreigners with objection to poultry s sought the prefect the other day—so runs a recent letter from Naplesonly to learn that the Naples by-laws place no obstacles whatsoever in the provision of fresh eggs and milk -lircct to the consumer. ‘•What did the American fruit men do when the country went dry ?’’ said Mayor E. A. Belcher (a member o’ the British Empire Exhibition Mission) at Wellington last week. In illusti ating value of publicity they got together a fend of; one and a half million dollars and .sppnt it on advertising the virtues of dried raisins. That money was spent so v.osely that they are continuing to advertise dried r.aisii's —and even include a slip telling you how to create your own distillery—witli great success.
