KOPU FERRY.

IMPROVEMENTS REQUIRED. WORKING PRACTICABLE. Mr. H. Lowe, chairman of the Thames County Council, reporting on a visit he and the M,ayor, of Thames had made to Wellington, said, in connection with the Kopu ferry, that according to Mr. Keane’s report there were certain works necessary to make the running of the Kopu ferry an absolute success. But .they would get fever all. difficulties. The Minister had been asked to foot the cost'of the repairs, which would be about £3OO. The Minister had been favourable, and had decided to give a reply. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The foreman of. works, reporting on the proposed works to the ferry, stated : 1. It is necessary to renew several of the piles that have been broken. 2. To drive intermediate piles between the present piles on the south side of both ramps, the distance between the present piles beipg too wide. 3. After the extra piles are driven, the south side of both ramps to be sheathed with 9in by 2in planking from the mud level up to high-water mark This will act as a deflector, and there will be dead water inside both the ramps, making it an easy matter for the working of; the ferry. 1. The landing at the east ramp from low-water to high-water mark on the road level is constructed of timber, and the grade, being fairly steep, makes it impossible for motorcars to travel up and down, and dangerous for cattle to get up and down. To overcome this difficulty it is proposed, after the flow of water is removed from the ramp by the sheathing as proposed above, to box in the travelling way by putting down a layer of suitable size metal an I blinding the same with metal chips. The estimated cos.kof the proposed work is £3OO.

The chairman stated that a copy of this report had been handed to the Minister when he (the speaker) was in Wellington.
