TURUA ROADING SCHEME

OLD PROPOSALS WANTED. LARGE SETTLERS’ MEETING. At Turua on Wednesday there was a large and representative gathering of settlers withip the proposed special rating area ip which it is proposed to make roads of) a permanent nature. The proposals, which were rejected by a small majority in January last, were for the expenditure of over £30,006 on permanent tarred roads. Un taunted by the reverse the Good Roads Committee took the matter in hand again and had the almost unanimous support of the ratepayers in the proposed ratipg area, the new arrangement being to submit the loah in three sections covering the northern, southern, and town board .areas, till complications arose io create a diversity of opinion. It is now evident, however, that an agreement has been reached, for at Wednesday s meeting it was decided to submit the original proposals, with a minor modification . At Wednesday’s meeting Mr. D. ,GMcMillan, chairman of the Good Roads Committee, was elected to the chair and briefly explained the object of the meeting. There were also present the following representatives of the Hauraki Plains County Council: The county chairman (Mr, J ,C. Miller) and Crs. W. G. Hayward and C. W. Harris. Mr, McMillan said the meeting must decide whether they wished to put the loan proposals divided among three small areas or whether they would adhere to the original scheme for one big loan. On the motion of Mr. P. R. Henry it was decided to adopt the scheme for one loan, and that the Council nc asked to raise a loan of about £30,000 for the work. It was also decided to make a little modification in the ■Scher e in that only 40 chains of the. Piako Road should be metalled, and the Government be asked to do th* remaining piece of road which was included in the original scheme.
