CONTROL OF WAIHOU.
COUNCILLORS SEEK ENLIGHTMENT. At the meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council on Thursday last the resolution from the Chamber of Commerce, asking the Council to co-operate with it in opposing the Thames Harbour Board from getting control of the Waihou River and wharves, was read. Cr. Johnstone thought that the Council should acceed to the request, and should strongly oppose any attempt of the Thames Harbour Board to obtain control of the river or wharves. He moved that the resolution should be supported. Cr. Corbett: Why’dowe object ? Cr. Johnstone : Because they would collect wharfage. Cr. Corbett: Eventually these wharves will be under some control, an .1 the Harbour Board was a thoroughly organised body, and represented the whole of the Valley. The Chairman said that they should object strongly to anything that might be in the way or stand in the light of the board that was to be formed as soon as the river work was done. Cr. Johnstone said that they were looking forward to the river being cleared up to Paeroa, and to have a body of their own. Cr. Corbett said that the river will eventually have to be controlled by some authority, and thought that the Harbour Board was the body to do such work. In any case, in fairness tn the Council, the Chamber should state why they should support the resolution. This was the third remit read, but none had given any reason why the Council should support them. On his resolution it was decided to write and ask the Chamber of Commerce for their reason on the matter.
