NGAHINA BRIDGE,

COST OF OPENING. WHO SHOULD PAY ? The matter of who should bear the cost of opening the Puke Bridge was brought up for discussion at the County meeting on Thursday last by Cr. Johnstone. At the present time, he said, the cost had to be shouldered by the Ohiuemuri and Hauraki Plains Councils, and seeing that it was to a large measure for the benefit of Waihi, Paeroa, and Te Aroha Boroughs, he thought that they should help pay the cost. The thing as it stood was not an equitable arrangement. He moved ‘ ‘ That the County ask for a conference with the other local bodies, namely, Hauraki Plains and Piako County Councils, and Waihi, Te Aroha, and Paeroa Borough Councils. Cr. Corbett, in seconding the proposal, thought that it was time the Ngahina wharf was used. If the opening of the bridge was for the benefit of other people, they should pay. In order to preserve the life of the bridge they should open it as little as possible. He thought that the Council should insist upon the wharf being used: Cr. Johnstone said that the reason for objecting was owing to the cost the Council was put to for opening the boidge. The motion was carried.
