PIGS ON THE PLAINS.
PROPOSED BACON FACTORY. COMPANY MANAGER’S VISIT. The proposal to erect a bacon fac tory on the Hauraki Plains' was again discussed at a meeting of the Ngatea branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union on Saturday, when a letter was read from Mr. S. C. Baron, general manager of the N.Z. Mteat. Packing and Bacon Company (Co-op.), Ltd., who wrote regretting his inability to attend a meeting on a date which had been suggested to him. Mr. W. G. Hayward (president) thought that about 3000 .cr 4000' pigs were being taken off the Plains each year. Mr. McDuff said that more than 2000 a year had been taken from the Plains by Mr. Sarjant, the company’s buyer. Mr. Davidson said that if the Bacon Company would not move in the mat j ter the settlers should provide capital for a factory of their own. Mr. Hayward believed that there would be no difficulty in starting a factory of their own, but most of the settlers on the Plains were shareholders in the company. . It was decided to ask Mr. Baron for a suitable date for a meeting this week Mr. Davidson suggested. asking representatives of other branches to attend.
