FARMERS’ UNION.

THE NOATB4 BRANCH, A meeting el the Ngatea branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held in the Ngatea Public Hall on Saturday, Mr W. G. Hayward presiding. There was a very fair attendance and a considerable amount of. business was done The secretary (Mr C. W. Shultz) announced that he had received the bank pass-book from the former secretary, and sent it tp the bank. There was a credit balance Of £37 2s Bd, A vote pf thanks was passed for the services of the former secretary (Mr A. Cleaver). DANGEROUS DRAINS. Mr W. J. Clare mentioned the fact that another horse and cart had fallen into one of. Ngatea’s drains. He urged that the drains should be protected in some way. Mr Hayward thought it would be better to divert the water from one drain. Mr Clare moved that Mr E. Taylor resident drainage engineer, be asked if there was a remedy for protecting the drains. Mr Shultz seconded and the motion was carried. PLAINS MACHINEY LOAN. Mr Davidson said the County Council had won the case against the machinery il'oan poll petition. He suggested a letter of congratulation. be sent to the clerk and Cpupcil. Mr W. McDtiff objected to the proposal as there may be many of the branch who had voted against the loan. Mr A. J. Andrews: The Council has got off very well. The subject was not further discussed. • RECKLESS RIDER. A little amuseemnt was caused, by one or two witty ones when Mr J. Phillips said that he had nearly been knocked down by reckless horsemen one evening recently. He thpught the men were inebriated, and he said an enormous amount pf liquor was consumed at Ngatea. A member : What was the matter ? Didn’t they offer you a drink ? Another member: Get the policeman transferred to Ngatea. It was decided the matter was one for the police. - TELEPHONES. Mr. Hayward said the telegraph linesmen were contemplating leaving Ngatea for a time and that they sliould be asked to connect up the houses on the main roads first. Mr. McDuff said he had already made that request. THE BRIDGE. Mr. Clare asked who controlled the bridge, the shipping people or the travelling public. The bridge the previous day had been up for some considerable time, waiting for a boat to come down the river. The cream carts and other traffic had been hung up while the boat was stuck in the river. Mr. Davidson.’ The mail car was hung up one morning for some time. Mr,. Clare said the shipping people were overriding the public. Mn. McDuff: I don’t think it is the shipping people, but the. man at the bridge. Mr Clare suggested that the boats should not be allowed to cal.l for the .bridge until they were a certain distance from it. THE NEW POST OFFICE. Mr. Davidson: How about an official opening of the post office ? Mr. Hayward: I think we should ignore the thing. It’s not worth an opening. STRAYING CATTLE. Mr. Miles moved that the Council’s attention be drawn to the cattle straying on the stop-bank and road. — Carried. PIGS. A ietter was received from the County Council with regard tp straying pigs in Ngatea, and enclosing a copy of a letter from the Health Inspector. It was decided to reply that the Inspector’s instructions had not been carried out with regard to the man concerned. A communication from Mr. Corringe, Inspector of Husbandry, advised that he would be in Ngatea after a contemplated visit to the Bast Coast. Mr. Corringe, it is understood, will lecture regarding the method of rearing and breeding pigs.
