HAURAKI PLAINS ROADS.
IN VERY BAD REPAIR Tn the course of his initial report Mr. J. Higgins, engineer, reported as follows to Monday’s meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council: "The roads throughout the whole of ;he county are in a very bad state of repair, and the revenue derived fro:) general rates is, in my opinion, quite inadequate to keep the metal roads on the Planis in good order. I have taken particular notice of the me'aiied roads on the eastern boundary of the county, comprising,Turua am. Netherton ridings, and I find that the metal generally speaking is in a dilapidated condition, chiefly due to the fact that the formation in the first place, due no doubt to want of capital, was badly prepared to receive meial. and, secondly, the bare six inches of; metal was not sufficient to meet the requirements of the district, and for the reasons stated maintna, nce has got to be carried on at an extremely high cost, and I would suggest that, the sooner your Council can secure a quarry from which you can draw unlimited supply of-hard broken metal, ami find the necessary means to lay down roads that will stafid. th# requirements of the district, with, of course, all due regard to cost, the sooner it will be found by benefits gained and saving in maintenance that such expenditure was amply justified.
