SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

e MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the School Committee on Saturday last the following were present: Messrs W. H. Taylor (chairman), E. E. GilL man, C. Pascoe, B. Veale, N. C. Busby, W. T. Power, A. G. Garry, W. Redfern, Ji. Couper (secretary), and the headmaster (Mr G. H. Taylor). SCHOOL GROUNDS. The following communication was received from the Education Board’s architect, Mr E, J, Farrell: “ I am in receipt of yours of the 30111 ultimo, enclosing plan of Paeroa School ground showing the position and length of; the drains required to connect with the Borough., system, also indicating the fencing which your committee states is required. With- regard ,to the drains, I will endeavour to arrange for the Board’s foreman to visit the school as early as possible with a view of obtaining full particulars, and furnish me with an estimate of what it would cost to connect with the Borough system. Re the fencing, I note that it is proposed .to fence off a portion of the Defence property which your committee has evidently obtained permission to use as a playground, although! the Board does not appear to have any information re same. I take it, therefore, that the local Defence authorities have agreed to allow the use of the ground temporarily on condition that a fence is erected, but unless the Board has a permanent title to the ground I do not think any expenditure should be made on same other than the fencing above referred to. The only other fencing .which appears to require attention is that on the boundary near the boys’ shelter-shed, and I will be glad if you could obtain an estimate from a local tradesman to erect these fences and forward the estimate to me as early as possible, and, providing same is reasonable, I will recommend tne Board to authorise a grant to cover the cost. Full particulars should be given of the work proposed, and I think under the present conditions the fencing should be of the ordinary posts and seven wires with battens between. A top rail Hence is hardly necessary, parflicularly on that portion of the ground on the drill hall site. If, however, the fencing on the boundary near the shelter-shed is st present top rail and wire, it should'be renewed in the same material, but if not an ordinary post and wire fence should meet requirements.” Tn discussing the matter of connecting up with the sewerage system Mr. E E. Gillman safid. that before this work was done he would like to see the grounds levelled off. This was part of the work the committee had recommended. With reference to the fencing, he moved that, alternate tenders be invited for the fencing, one for the fence with a top rail and the other a seven-wire fence. The tenders to be invited by advertisement in the local paper'. The 'chairman seconded the proposition, which, after some discussion, was carried. . The following is the estimate for the proposed improvements scheme on which the committee is endeavouring to obtain a subsidy : Wire netting fences, £56 ; main entrance gateway and side access ways, £l5 10s ; main entrance steps (in concrete), £l5 15s; rock borders and arch over drain, £l7 10s ; second entrance access ways. £l2 10s ; second entrance steps (in concrete), £l6 10s ; stone fading embankment and tile drain at base, £9 15s; playground seats, £6O ; waste-paper baskets, £ll ; furniture £25; organised games goods, £5; making a total of £244 10s With reference to proceeding witn the work it was decided to expend the amount collected in the meantime and to complete .the work on receipt of thp subsidy. The chairman said that the amount of £25 had been earmarked for furnishing the teachers’ room. A member stated that £6O seemed a lot of money for playground seats. In answer to this Mr. Gillman said that he would have hiked, at least £73, but had had to reduce the amount owing to the limit of funds'. The headmaster agreed that seats for the playground were essential. TYPEWRITERS. A letter was received from the Board intimating that the Board had resolved to lend the committee two typewriters for .the use of the secondary pupils. It was decided to thank the Board for the typewriters. TIROHIA SCHOOL. Authority was given to Mr. Veale to have some necessary work done at the Tlroliia school.
