LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The postmaster, Mr, J. G.. McDougall, notifies that- mails which left Wellington on April 22, per RMS. Remuera, via Panama, arrived at London on June 4‘. Authority has been given to the Hauraki Plains County Council to raise a loan of. £350 for completing the formation of; the Waitakarura roads. We direct, attention to an advertisement from the Hangatiki Lime Limited, re their ground lime for agricultural purposes which appears in our advertisement columns. The services ofi the Methodist Church will be held in the new Sunday School building for the next two Sundays while renovations are being made to the church; Uncomplimentary references were male at the Turua Town Board meeting on Wednesday evening of the punt-load of metal for Hulrau Road landed at Turua early in the week. The chairman, Mr. J. Bennett, said the metal was of little use. It had been broken so small, that it would go through a very fine sieve. A county council that had been in existence for two years, maintained MrBennett, should be able to make bette’’ arrangements for procuring metal. Mr, J. Bennett, chairman of the Turua Town Board, reporting on his interview with the Hon. J. G. Coates, said that a £ for £ subsidy had been asked for the Piako, Orchard East, and Kerepeehi roads. The cost of the scheme was £BO.OO find the Minister was asked for £4OOO. The Minister bad replied that the money could not be obtained in one sum, but may be obtained over a period of three years. The deputation (Mr. Bennett and Mr. McMillan) had also interviewed the officials at the Public Works Department, who had promised to send an engineer to inspect the roads. Mr. Rhodes had aelped the deputation considerably and promised to help the matter on as much as possible.
Figures dealing with the valuation of land in the area under the Turua Town Board were submitted at the meeting of the Board on Wednesday evening. The valuation roll showed that rateable lands in European occupation have a capital value of £34,740, and an unimproved value of £23,300 while the value of improvements is £11,440. The rateable lands under Nat’ve occupation was shown to be: capital value, £125; unimproved vahie, £100; and value of improvements. £25. The lands, exempt and non-rateable are £725 in capital value, £430 in unimproved value, and £295 in value of improvements. The gross totals are: Capital value, £35,590 ; unimproved value, £23 830 ; and the value of improvements, £11,760.
A double-pa ge drawing of; the wrecked “Wiltshire” and comprehensive scenes taken at the Great Barrier are features of this week’s issue of the "Sporting and Dramatic Review.” The Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting is also singled out for special photographis treatment, and t.he remainder of .the well-illus-trated section is devoted to incidents at the Genoa Conference, Wales and France Rugby football, at Harlem, racing at Kempton Park (England), fashion modes at the Auteuil Racecourse, theatrical and movie stars, etc.
