THE Hauraki Plains Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, JUNE 9, 1922. TURUA ROADING SCHEME.

• Since the Turua permanent reading proposals were vetoed by the ratepayers in that special rating area there, has been a growing desire to have the .proposals resubmitted and it is now evident that the town board people and the farming community are practically unanimous that a permanent scheme is the only solution to their roadlhg problem. That problem is indeed a great one. It has been maintained that the present shocking roads have been the means of losing a great deal of trade to Turua. . The townspeople, realising this, may be depended upon to give the scheme their strong support, though, as the voting showed, they were opposed to it last January. But while both sections of the community are unanimous on one matter — that of good roads — there is another which has already struck a discordant note, and, unless handled tactfully by both parties, may be the means of creating a deadlock, which in other words will keep the Turua people bumping about on their present rutty roads. At a conference between the good roads committee and the Town Board, it was unanimously decided to submit three separate proposals to create three special rating areas — the Northern, Southern and Central (or Town Board) areas. Since then, however, certain complications have arisen ‘ and it is found that if there are three areas, the Northern and Southern will be rated at 7/11 and 7/6 per acre respectively, while the town Board area would have to bear the burden of 13/9 per acre or considerably more than with the original scheme. NatU’ally the townspeople will support the scheme which aflects their pockets least, and have so expressed their attentions. The Southern ratepayers are equally determined to have three distinct areas, but have shown their readiness to effect a settlement by offering to bear the cost of 40 chains of the Town Board's main road An indication of the townsmen’s attitude towards this proposal is awaited with interest. Whether or not the relief from the cost of half a mile of road will be sufficient i iducement for the Town Board to support the three separate proposals is a matter to be given due consideration at the next public meeting. It, however, shows that the farming community is prepared to meet the townsfolk half way find share the burden as equally as possible. The advent of that spirit an indication of harmonious relationship between the parties concerned and evidence that Turua's reading problem is soon to be solved.
