TURUA TOWN DISTRICT.

MEETING OF THE BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Turua Town Board was held on Wednesday evening, the following attending: Messrs. J, Bennett (chairman). E. Whimp, A. C. Scott, F. Olsen, J. T. Davies, J. Mules, and J E. Green (clerk), The chairman apologised for the . absence of Mr. C. A. Ansford. REPAIRS TO FOOTPATHS The clerk in a letter to the Thames County Council asked if it could sunply a punt-load of me'tp.l chips to fill up numerous holes in. the footpaths. Mr. Olsen said something should be done to the footpaths. He thought that sand from the Matatoki point would be cheaper than the chips and would do instead of tar and sand. It was agreed that the footpaths must he attended to immediately, and the works committee was deputed ,to obtain material at a satisfactory price and was given full power to act in this connection. Messrs. Olsen and Bennett were appointed a works committee for the month. FINANCES The clerk, writing to the Undersecretary to the Minister for Internal Affairs, With reference to obtaining finance pending the collection of rates, stated that the approximate improved or capital value of the property within the town board was £23,500, and a l%d rate on this, which the Board at present proposed striking, would amount to £220. The Board was most anxious to get some funds as soon as possible to pay outstanding accounts for the foimiation of the Board and to carry out a few small urgent works, and asked if the Department could facilitate the Board to obtain the funds. The reply stated it would appear tha* the best course to adopt would be to grant the Board power to borrow by overdraft, and the Board should state the amount it desired to borrow by that means. In addition it was stated that the Local Bo lies Finance Act provided that the limit allowed to be borrowed by overdraft in the case of a local authority other than a newly constituted one shall be three-fourths of its revenue tor the preceding year, and the amount decided by the Turua Board must not be more than three-fourths o' the .estimated revenue receivable over its area. On the motion of Messrs. Olsen and Scott it was decided to strike a rate of l%d in the £ on the capital value. This was estimated to bring in arannua] revenue of £217. THE WHARF OPENING The Thames Harbour Board advised that the Prime Minister had replied to a letter and stated that ho could not attend the official oepning of the Turua wharf. The Hon. Mr. Anderson (Minister for Marine) had promised to attend. Mr. Bennett said that. Mr. Harris (chairman of the Thames Harbour Board) had hinted that the function would probably take the form of) a luncheon. It was agreed that the .Board could not offer any financial assistance to the function The clerk was instructed to write to the Harbour Board stafirg that the Town Board was prepared to give all assistance to make the function a success and regretting that they were not in a position to render financial help. It was also decided to ask for further particulars. BY-LAWS. It was decided tp hold a special meeting of the Board on Monday to frame by-laws. A RESIGNATION. Mr. Whimp said his position on, the Board would become vacant, as he was moving to Whangarei. He suggested that to aVold the expense of an election the different parties in Turua might co-operate and elect a suitable person unopposed. Mr. Bennett expressed regret at Mr. Whimp’s departure.
