OBITUARY.
STEPHEN EDWARD HUGHES
Mr Stephen Edward Hughes, who was accidentally drowned on Friday uight last, was a highly respected resident of Paeroa, and much regret was expressed in the town when the news of his death became known. He was the son of Alfred George Hughes, a chemist now practising in Nelson, and was born in Cambridge. Deceased was a prominent member of the Star of Paeroa Lodge of Druids. He was a fervent Catholic, and took a keen interest in all church matters. He was 37 years of age, and leaves a young wife and six children, their ages ranging from two years to thirteen, to mourn their loss.
The body was removed to the Roman Catholic Church yesterday, and last evening the Rev. Father Whelan preached a very touching sermon from a passage taken from “The Book of Wisdom.’’ The reverend gentleman extended his sincere sympathy to the widow and other relatives in their sad bereavement.
The funeral leaves the Catholic Church at 2.30 this afternoon for the Paeroa cemetery.
