WAITAKARURU.
MIRANDA ROADS.
Great improvements have been made to the Miranda Roads, the tractor and grader having graded the main road to Messrs Adams Bros’ farm. The work has been distinctly beneficial and the road has never before been in a better state during the winter months. Culverts on this road have also been decked. The Waiwerawera creek opposite Mr. R. Coxhead’s house has been closed in a four-foot concrete culvert has replaced the crossing in the open creek, affording greatly improved facilities for traffic, which was previouriy found in difficulties when attempting to cross the creek. Several other concrete culverts have also been put in along the road. ROAD GRADING. The Lands Department, it has been noticed, has not y<t complied with the promises of the Minister to grade both sides of the canal road before the winter. The settlers along the canal consider this an urgent matter and wonder why the work as promised has not yet been done.
Another matter of urgency for the canal settlers is the repairing of the side walk. While at present a few dray loads of sand would put the path in good repair, it may be found that if the matter is neglected, an entirely new path will be required.
The County Council’s grader is expected in Waitakaruru shortly to grade that portion of the Main Pokeno-Waitakaruru Road between Mrs Haley’s, corner and the Morrinsville-Waitakaruru road. THE DREDGE. The Priertman (floating) dredge is making good progress in its work of cutting • the WaitakaruruMaukoro canal and is now working at the furthest boundary of Mr Donaldson’s Section which is the last along the canal road and about miles from the bridge on the main Waitakaruru-Ngatea Road. As the dredge works further inland the banks of the canal become gradually higher and now the level of the water is 11 feet from the level of the land. Increasing difficulty is consequently being found to work the dredge and it will soon be necessary to make another dam to raise the level of the water.
