OHINEMURI COUNTY.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. ADOPTION OF SUGGESTIONS. - The County engnieer, Mr. E. Shaw; reported as follows on the past month’s work: Authority has been received from the Public Works Department for the following works : Repairs to Houmanga Road and Golden Cross bridge; also to Princess Street, Waikino. Tenders are called for the latter, and close at 2 p.m. this day (Thursday). The two former works I am having carried out on day labour. Repairs are being effected to the Hikutaia Settlement Road and Paeroa-Te Aroha main road. During the late repairs to Golden Cross Road a 36in concrete culvert was required, but owing to the then state of the road it was impossible to get .the pipes on to the site. To overcome this difficulty I unearthed sufficient old iron watex’ pipes from the Golden Cross mine for the purpose whicii will last for many years. The Waitekauri water main, which was carried away in the last flood, has been restored. The cost of same did not exceed the estimate. Urgent repairs were made to the abattoir during the month. I wish to draw your Council’s attention to the state of these premises, which are very much in disrepair and shall need a thorough overhaul before longThis Would have been attended to had there been any funds at my disposal for this work. The road roller is in working order again and placed back in the shed. Owing to the unsettled state of the weather I was unable to complete the unfinished portion of the Old Te Aroha Road.
Re Whangamata Road grant: The Inspector of Mines has been instructed to report on damage and cost of extension. With reference .to the drain from the Puke Road to the river for which assistance was asked at your last meeting, Cr. Johnstone and I inspected this drain and have'agreed to pay quarter cost of the same. A letter will come before you today dealing with a carter in Waihi (J. Patterson) who is carting mining timber and firewood over the back roads on the Plains. I drew his attention to the by-laws dealing with this class of wor.k, and he assured me that if; fie was allowed to continue he would cart metal' free of cost -and deposit same on a length of Old Tauranga Road principally used by the settlers and which is now becoming almost impassable. As there is a Government subsidy (£ for £) on this road I would recommend’ that he be given half the cost of his original offer, which was 8s 6d per yard’, provided the Government subsidy is available. Metal in this vidinity cost 12s 6d per yard a few months lago. ABATTOIR CHARGES. Cr. Morgan said tine charges fpr the abattoir had been too light—much lighter than Thames and Waihi —and not sufficient fpr upkeep. He moved that the charges fpr cattle and sheep be brought up to those of Waihi ami Thames. Cr. Corbett seconded, and the motion was carried. ROAD AT WA|IHI. Cr. Corbett realised that Mr. Patterson’s proposition was cheap and the metal was good. He realised that if the Gpevrnment grant were available the settlers could be paid for the work. He moved that the engineer’s report on the matter be adopted. —Carried.
