The committee of St. Marys’ (Anglican) Church has agreed to allow the church to be used as an infant school duririg the reconstruction period, but so far the Department has not approved the offer. No doubt approval will be received before the week’s holiday is finished. SOCIAL AND EUCHRE..
The social and euchre tournament held on Thursday night in aid of the Memorial Gates Fund was very largely, attended, and proved a huge success in .every way. The ladies’ committee, which consisted of Mesdames j A. K. Alley, W. H. Alley, Collins, El- ! Hot, and Murdoch, and Miss Frost; I are to be highly, congratulated on the I result of their efforts. The music J supplied by Mr .Williams’ orchestra ! was all’that could be desired, While I the supper purveyed by the local caterer, Mr Rheims', was excellent. The floor, 'too, was in good order, and the M.C. (Mr F. Hill) assiduous in the discharge ofc his 'duties. The I euchre competition, ih charge of [ Messrs I. M. Robinson and G. Avery, J was keenly contested, the winners i being found in Mrs J. Corbett and Mr Shine. The lady’s prize was a pretty little watch in silver 'and enamel cases kindly presented by Mr C. M. Smith. A handsome, carved flower stand, presented to the com'iniltee by Mr “Bob.” Lowry, was won by Mrs W. H. Alley. Bi is estimated that the result to the Gates Fund will ■ approximate double figures. 1 I WEATHER AND SOWING. I The recent wet weather, while doing a great amount of good to the pastures, is delaying grass.-sowing. While feed is very plentiful flor this I season of "the year the milk supply to the cheese factory is only about a i third of what it was during the flush. I FOOTBALL. The Suburbs v. Netherton senior football match was played on the ( Hikutaia grounds on Saturday. Though the visitors were three men short they proved top good for the home team, the result of ihe match giying them a jvin by six points to three. The game was a fast one throughout, the local forwards playing an excellent game. Suburbs played strenuously during the second i.half, but the effort to equalise was ] made too late, the visitors’ defence being too stubborn to overcome. The comments on the decisions of the referee (Mr R. B. Pen.lington) by the ' spectators were not altogether comi plimentary. PERSONAL. L Mr Vennables, the well-known i musician, from Te Arohal, with Mrs ’ Vennables, spent the week-end with Mr and Mrs C. M. Smith., Mr W. H. Norton, the popular factory manager,’ihn's so far recovered from a severe attack of jaundice a-, to be able to resume duty.
