SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING.
The monthly meeting of the Paeroa District High School Committee was held on Saturday night. Present: Messrs W. H. Taylor (chairman), E. E. Gillman, Sergt.-Major N. C. Busby, J. Garry, J. Pascoe, L. Cane, W. Power, and Jas, Couper, secretary. TIROHIA SCHOOL. A petition was received from the * Tirohia school ‘ authorities, represented by Mr B. Veale, asking that Paeroa Committee support their applica-i tion to the Auckland Education Board to be permitted to form a separate committee for Tirohia School. This request was unanimously supported by the Paeroa committee, and tlie secretary was instructed to write to the Board accordingly. A request w,as received from religious organisations asking permission to use the Tirohia school on. Sundays for Divine services.—granted, on the motion Mr Busby, seconded by Mr Power. Mr Veale said the parents wanted to get certain parts of the grounds metalled. On the motion of Mr Gilman. seconded by Mr Pascoe, the Committee decided to write to the Board in support. Mr Veale said the settlers were prepared to do the carting and spreading. The committee also supported a request to the Forestry Department for the supply of trees for planting ’n. the Tirohia School grounds, for beautifying purposes. MANUAL TRAINING SCHOOL, The secretary was instructed ; to write to Mr E. E. Banks (chairman of the Auckland Education Board) for particulars in reference to the proposed raising of debentures for the-Manual Training School, on the same basis as Mr Banks proposed for the financing of the proposed Technical High School. x Mr Gil Iman moved that if a favourable reply was received from Mr Banks, a special meeting be arranged to discuss ways of raising the finance.—Uarried. - CROSSING WANTED. It. was reported that tfjhe Borough Council would probably put in a crossing pt .the School entrance, and clean the drain fronting the School. Itl was remarked that the street was in a deplorably bad condition. The drain was in a filthy state, and. the harbourage for rats. It was decided that a deputation wai.t on the Council at next meeting. The chairman said Jt’hat as soon as the sewerage drain reached .the* School the Board would probably have the School septic tank outlet connected up.. . . A member remarked that the effluent from the tank came out into t'he open, which was a most dangerous thing in the vicinity "of a school where 400 children were attending. Comment was freely made that the number of conveniences at the School was extremely inadequate, and it was decided to write to the Board to in--crease the number before the connexion was made with the borough sewerage system. Messrs Pascoe and Gill man were deputed to prepare a report on the subject, to be forwarded i|o the Board. OBSTRUCTING FENCE. ' Mr Gillman moved that if the Board granted the subsidy for the School improvements, the* committee remove the remainder of the thorn fence, some forty yards, and carry the stone bank and netting fence right through. The thorn hedge was actually growing, roots and all, bnthe footpath, and pedestrians were liable to be injured by having their faces scratched by the thorns, especially at night-time, the street being poorly lighted.
